Lompoc, California is a small city in southern California, located about an hour's drive from the San Francisco Bay Area. The population was 168 at the 2010 census. Lompoc is first mentioned in 1847 as Los Angeles Point on Rancho Rinconada. It was officially incorporated as a town on November 14, 1919. The history of Lompoc goes back to 1847 when Rancho Rinconada was granted to Pedro Crespo and José Guadalupe Baca by Governor Manuel Micheltorena. The grant included land for three miles east of present-day downtown Lompoc. In 1851, cattle ranchers Flournoy and Swayze bought two thousand acres (800 ha) of Rancho Rinconada land south of downtown Lompoc from Pedro Crespo and José Guadalupe Baca. They named their ranch "Lomond" after Scottish explorer James himself and his brother John Muir who had explored the area earlier that year. In 1886, Lomond became part of what is now Orange County when it was split off from Santa Barbara County. At its peak, the community had a population over five hundred people and boasted a public library, post office, banks, churches and schools. However, by 1920 there were only seventy-six residents living in what is now downtown Lompoc; seven percent of its original population density! Today's Downtown core contains several businesses including Starbucks Coffee Company which opened its first store in Downtown Lomond in 1999; Qualcomm Incorporated's headquarters building which opened in 2000; The Journal News Building which houses the local weekly newspaper; AARP Western Region Headquarters - also home to AARP’s largest insurance company presence outside of North America.; Villa Park Plaza - one of Southern California’s most popular shopping destinations with more than thirty stores including Macy’s Department Store chain.,[1]and numerous restaurants including Subway sandwich shop (opened 1997), Chow Mein restaurant (1991), Panda Express Chinese Restaurant (1995), Jack In The Box fast food restaurant (1996), Pappas Bros Italian Restaurant & Gelateria (2005).

By 1978, Lompoc had reached one hundred thousand residents and was designated as an international city with a bureaux de commerce located in London and other British cities.
