Lompoc was founded on October 8, 1875 by American brothers George and Samuel Larkin as a small community on Rancho San Miguel de las Pulgas just east of Paso Robles. In 1887 it became an incorporated municipality. The Town Board changed its name to Lompoc in 1922 to reflect its annexation into the City of San Luis Obispo. The first post office in Lompoc opened on July 15, 1887. It closed on December 8, 1903 due to low mail volume and high postage rates. The first postmaster was Wm Horsfall who served for six months from July 15 until August 30, 1887 In 1906 the town had a population of 1,525 and it had two general stores and eleven churches with services conducted each Sunday morning by ministers from around the county. Two years later it had 527 people and three businesses when it annexed into the City of San Luis Obispo On January 1, 1916 Lompoc became one of ninety townships in California which were created as part of Proposition 66 (the Statewide Roads Plan). On November 3rd 1920 voters approved changing their name back to Lompoc after yearslong discussion among residents about what name would represent their town better A referendum held on February 2nd 1924 yielded another vote for "Lompoc" over "San Lorenzo". Finally on May 12th 1928 the Town Board made up its mind that “Lompoc” should be used as our new permanent name because “It has been our history here since we were platted; it represents us well both physically and morally”

Lompoc is known for its annual "Lompoc Santa Parade" and its golf course, Mary's Golf Course. Lompoc was founded on December 12, 1887 by James E. Fenton and his wife Jane Oakes Fenton (née Beall). The town took its name from Lompoc Point on the east side of America Bay near modern day Lompoc. At first it consisted only of a few residents and their families who lived along America Bay Road in what is now called Old Town. In 1890 an addition to the town was made by purchasing land northeast of present-day Lompoc from John Prentice and others who had earlier built a house thereon known as Prentice’s Rancho Niguel Adobe House. The first post office opened in 1893 with Jens Jensen as the first employee. In 1896 two more post offices were established - one north of present-day Lompoc at Alice Beach (now part of Agoura Hills) and one south of present-day Lompoc at Carpinteria (now part of Thousand Oaks). By 1912 there were six post offices in Lomopoca with a total population totalling 514 people; however, by 1915 the population had fallen to 389 due to increased travel within Southern California and lack thereof outside the area because mail service then ceased between Los Angeles and points east after World War I.. In 1923 Jens Jensen died suddenly leaving behind four children including James E., Jr., who succeeded him as Postmaster General until his death in 1951; Louise S.; Alvin R.; Annette A.; all three daughters became Postmistresses themselves upon their father's retirement.. In 1951 City Manager Earle Crouch appointed Donald Wetherington as Acting Mayor effective February 14 following Mayor Harry Goudreau's resignation due to ill health.. On July 1st 1957 City Manager Earle Crouch retired effective September 30th after serving 27 years...On January 3rd 1960 City Manager Earle Crouch appointed Harry Goudreau Acting Mayor effective February 14 following Mayor Donald Wetherington's resignation due to ill health...On January 3rd 1960 City Manager Earle Crouch resigned effective September 30th after serving 27 years...Donald Wetherington served as acting mayor until he was elected mayor on November 6th 1966 when he assumed office for an unexpired term ending December 31st 1967
