Lompoc is a city in Northern California, located on the San Luis Obispo County coast. The population was 23,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and lies about 8 miles (13 km) northeast of downtown San Francisco. The town was founded in 1849 by brothers Elias and George Lompoc, who named it for their father, Lorenzo Emeterio Lompoc. The first post office opened in 1850. In 1852, the town re-incorporated as a city under the name "Lompoc". In 1863, John Sutter discovered gold near Lompoc and began developing what would become Sacramento County; he named his new county "Lompoc" after his hometown of Lodi, New Mexico. By 1870, most of Sacramento County had been surveyed and patented by Sutter; only a small section remained unpatented when he died in 1872. A year later, however, another prospector discovered gold onshore at Point Conception and naming it "Lompoc", which became an official name for the entire area in 1874. The dredging of the Monterey Channel began during World War II to make way for naval vessels Arizonian (SS-323) and Paddlewheel (APD-2), both fitted with surfaced tanks to catch minesweepers; these operations were visible from Point Conception across Bass Strait to Southern California well into 1943 when they were finally discontinued due to high casualties among sailors engaging minesweepers instead. After years of deliberation by City Council members chaired by Mayor Bernard Jaffe (1948–1972), one block south of downtown on First Street between Masonic Avenue and Second Street was chosen as site for what would eventually become City Hall—the first building constructed within city limits since incorporation—and City Manager's Office Building (now Administration Building). Lompoc is known for its annual Lompoc Carnival, which takes place in late February or early March. The town was founded in 1878 by ranchers who named it after their farm near LaPresa, New Mexico. It has been a small agricultural community since before California became a state; most of the land around Lompoc was bought and sold by settlers and businesses from1868 to 1912. In 1969, however, the town became an annex of San Luis Obispo County when the county was created from portions of Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties. The history of Lompoc can be traced back to 1878 when ranch hands called it "Lomprick". There were no schools in that area until 1885 when one opened up on Castro Street in downtown La Presa. By 1899 there were two school districts in Lompoc with over 100 students each: East High School (later renamed South Coast Union High School) and North Coast Union High School (later renamed North Hollywood). In 1906–07, A&M Technical College moved into what is now Community & Event Center #2 on State Route 101A off US 101A east of town center. In 1912 nearby LaPresa merged with Lomprick to form one new municipality - LaPresa-Lomprick Adjustable Agricultural District No. 1(LAAPD). That same year saw construction begin on first post office building on present day Spring Street - later renamed Town Hall (1912-present). That first post office served as an important link between rural residents and city dwellers for many years until it closed its doors permanently in 1978 due to budget cuts within LAAPD's then newly created marketing services bureau - today known as City Services Department! After annexation into San Luis Obispo County, several businesses took advantage of lower taxes within the new jurisdiction including becoming incorporated under various names such as Empire landfill company (1921), Crystal Valley Dam company (1927), Rancho Seco water redevelopment trust company (1945), etc.; but all eventually failed due to economic difficulties during World War II including local shortages caused byCalifornian fuel rationing consequent uponthe war effort efforts! In 1969 village incorporation occurred when parts of Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties were annexed into San Luis Obispo County creating what is now called "Los Angeles" about 20 miles away!
