In 1987, LAPD officer Ricardo Ramos was acquitted after pleading no contest to manslaughter after spraying CS gas into crowd protesting his firing outside Koreatown Senior High School

In recent years, however, Lompoc has lost some its prominence as a commercial center because of technological advances such as the Interstate 880 freeway which crossed through downtown and made it difficult to reach many parts of town by bike or car.
