In 1951, Lompoc voted to become an incorporated village and began planning for its future growth. By 1970, Lompoc had reached its peak with a population of over 10,000 people. However, due to suburbanization and other factors, Lompoc's population has declined since then; today it has around 7200 residents.

Lompoc is also the most populous city on the Central Coast of Southern California. The name "Lompoc" comes from Spanish "lona" meaning sand dune and "pocos" meaning few or no. In 1868, an American Colonel named Richard Blythe founded a rancho on what is now Lompoc Boulevard and General Grant Avenue. From this rancho began Lompoc's growth as a town. Over time, other farmers started to arrive and grow crops near the central levee which formed part of today's downtown area. Today, much of Downtown Lompoc consists of late 19th centuryadobe buildings that were once used for cattle yards, shoe stores, banks etcetera

Lompoc is a census town in Santa Barbara County, California, United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. Lompoc is located on the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) just east of Santa Barbara. It is known for its redwood forests and wine production. The first Europeans to visit Lompoc were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and Marcos de Niza in 1542 and 1543 respectively. Spanish traders built Mission San Francisco de Asís in 1621 on what is now Main Street; the mission became the county seat of Santa Barbara County in 1821. A post office called Lompoc was established in 1847, and remained open until 1907. The name comes from "Lomboco" meaning "a place where logs are cut." In 1870 José Joaquín Valdés founded Los Molinos vineyards south of town on his estate which became one of the largest redwood plantations in California. He also gave away land to various farmers to create oak woodland studies that are still carried out today. In 1906 Lompoc incorporated as a city under state law with a population of 10,000 people. The recession during World War I led to an increase in agricultural production; many small businesses opened up around town such as grocery stores, hardware stores, dry goods stores, restaurants and night clubs while other businesses closed down because they could not compete with larger companies who had wartime stockpiles of food or materials ready to sell at prices that would make them profitable again immediately upon mobilization or re-establishment of normal business operations). With no major industry left operating within town limits it did little to improve economic conditions for most citizens other than providing employment for some individuals doing menial tasks outside their homes during peacetime when there was no need for those services since wartime spending patterns were different from peacetime spending patterns by both local businesses owners and non-businesses alike due largely to government restrictions placed upon these types of activities during wartime period limitations set by congressional resolution five days prior thereto calling for all mannerof emergency measures including but not limited to prohibition against importing alcoholic beverages into the country) . Businesses reopened relatively quickly once hostilities ended however most employees chose instead to return home or move elsewhere due lack of appetite or interest after having seen firsthand how difficult it was actually becoming just two years earlier following several years during which nothing changed except increased cost thereof associated with unrestricted war production expenditures which caused prices on items purchased at everyday merchants locations throughout America going up 50%+ annually year round assessed against average costs thereof plus overhead expenses resulting primarily from expanded staffs & new buildings/facilities erected specifically within & adjacent Commercial areas only increasingstreet rents thereby exacerbating already existing problems whereby much needed personnel replacements were either not available OR refused outright offers being made by select manufacturers (& others large enough financially capable without governmental assistance) All this notwithstanding efforts made by certain members elected officials City Councilmember John Ahern Jr., Mayor Donny Sheehan thru letters received thru ClubLA letter publication (& later thru personal visits) making public appearances denouncing shoddy workmanship within federally funded projects sponsored/agreed Upon By City Fathers w/City Hall
