Lompoc, California is known as the "Gun Mecca" of the United States. It has been home to gun manufacturers and dealers for over a century, and the city has become an important center for firearms training. The city's many targets are a part of its history and culture. The first target in Lompoc was built in 1875 by Wm. H. Tanner, a local developer. The Tanner Target Company was founded in 1887 by Charles Ewell Sellers, who later became president of Winchester Arms Corporation. In 1898, Lompoc's only competitive shooting event took place at the old Lompoc Arsenalsite on Cherry Avenue. At that time, there were only shotguns and pistols available for purchase. In 1911, Lompoc resident Augustus Saint-Gaudens donated land to the City of Lompoc to be used as a public park system. The park includes several miles of rifle range, pistol range, two baseball diamonds (one with a track), three tennis courts (two with clay Courts), four playgrounds (three with swings and one with a slide), two swimming pools (including one indoors), two football fields (both with grass fields),and two basketball courts; as well as numerous other facilities including an auditorium/theater and athletic field house which served as both municipal office building and arena during World War II when it was used as an airbase housing fighter planes during aerial combat operations against Japan In 1943-1945 Gunnery Sergeant George Sledge from USAAF Squadron 226 experienced combat flying missions over Iwo Jima while carrying out target practice on USS Yorktown off Okinawa using .50 caliber machineguns mounted on his B-24 Liberator bomber

In 1937, Lompoc became one of only two cities in California (the other being San Francisco) to allow open carry of handguns with no permit needed. This move helped spur wider handgun ownership across the state and country – something that still exists today! In 1939, Armistice Day was celebrated throughout California with patriotic events such as parades and gunfire competitions. That same year saw LompOC host its very first rifle competition - which involved participants from all over California! Lomboc continues hosting various types of firearm competitions each year including Trap/Takedown/ Skeet/Pistol/Slaughter contests; it's truly an amazing place to spend some time outdoors shooting!
Lompoc is a city located in the San Joaquin Valley of California, about an hour's drive from Stockton. It has a population of over 86,000 as of 2010 and is the largest city in Merced County. The name comes from Spanish for "dune" and "californio." The first European tosight of Lompoc was on December 3rd, 1769 when Gaspar de Portolà observed the sandbars at the mouth of the San Joaquin River. In 1821, Major James Hutton established what would become Rancho La Brea onshore off Point Conception. The town began to grow rapidly after it became part of incorporated territory in 1865. By 1870, Lompoc had a post office, schoolhouse and three stores. Lompoc experienced its first fire in 1872 when an early settler built a campfire on Topanga Creek near present-day Central Avenue and Third Street. The fire caused extensive damage to homes and businesses before being put out with water hose by firefighters under cover of darkness. In 1894, Tom Dooley founded one of the world's first shoe companies here. Dooley's Shoes Ltd., now known as New Balance Corporation was started in 1898 on Tenth Street between First and Second Avenues in what is now downtown Lompoc; Dooley renamed his business after himself (New Balance). The company grew rapidly until World War I when demand for shoes waned due to wartime rationing; however, New Balance continued to operate until 1945 outside America during World War II as American Shoe Corporation (AShoCo). After World War II ended there were several waves of immigration which led to significant growth including Hispanic/Latino ascendancy starting around 1960s through 1990s particularly following Chicano militancy against US non-white racism spanning many decades prior After years struggling with various economic difficulties caused by global recession – 2008-09 - Lompoc went bankrupt but new mayor Bob Hecht helped turn it around by implementing new strategies such as aggressive marketing campaigns that targeted younger generations who saw themselves becoming entrepreneurs or joining tech startups while also increasing funding for public infrastructure projects that include expanding freeway access into downtown area while creating more job opportunities throughout the city center

A mission was established there in 1821 by Father Francisco Palomares and named Santa Clara de las Pulgas (St. Clara of the Bees). In 1842, Mexican general Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna founded a rancho here with 7,500 acres (24 km²) of land. Santa Anna donated most of this land to the Catholic church for use as a parish center and primary school system. The Rancho Los Robles Adobe house still stands today as one of several historical buildings in Lompoc dating from this time period including the Episcopal Church built in 1854-1855 on what is now Main Street In 1862 Californian entrepreneur John Sutter settled nearby on some high ground called Mount Diablo where he began production of wine and other crops under his new winery name "Sutter's Fort". In 1865 Sutter sold his vineyards to local developer Waddell Edwards who built an large adobe mansion which served as both his private home and business headquarters until 1924 when it burned down during a fire that destroyed much of downtown Los Angeles. It wasn't until 1896 that millionaire Edwin Hildebrandt arrived from Germany with plans to subdivide agricultural land west of Los Angeles into housing developments known collectively as "Hollywood Hills". When Hildebrandt learned about Lompoc's rich history he decided against developing it himself but instead donated over 1 million dollars (at that time $30 million) towards its preservation Lomboc was incorporated as a town on February 20, 1922 The city hall building currently stands on Main Street between Third and Fourth Streets east of State Route 246 across from Isla Vista High School
