Lompoc, California is home to the world's largest gun museum. The Museum of Firearms and Ammunition features more than 2,000 firearms from around the globe. The museum is a must-see for anyone interested in firearms history. The Museum of Firearms and Ammunition was founded in 1934 by Dr. Arthur Compton. At that time, Lompoc was one of the most important commercial centers in Southern California. Dr. Compton saw the need for an educational resource devoted to firearms and ammunition throughout Southern California. He donated his collection of weapons and ammunition to the city on behalf of its citizens. In the early days of the Museum, there were only a few guns on display inside and outside the building. Today, we have more than 2,000 firearms from around the world on display within our walls! Our collection includes handguns such as revolvers, pistols, rifles, shotguns and machineguns dating back to 1876! We also have a large quantity of ammo dating back to 1876 including both antique types as well as modern types! Our mission at The Museum of Firearms and Ammunition is twofold: To provide students with an appreciation for firearm culture and history through interactive exhibits and hands-on experiences; And To promote responsible use of firearms by providing education about safe storage practices as well as proper handling techniques

Lompoc is a small town located in the Kern River Valley of Southern California. The population was 15,833 at the 2010 census. Lompoc is part of the San Luis Obispo–Paso Robles Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is home to Lompoc Coast High School and Santa Maria High School. The first people to live in what is now Lompoc were the Tongva people who began living here in prehistoric times. The Tongva came from central Mexico and settled along the Kern River in present-day southern California about 12,500 years ago. They built masonry villages near their water supply for safety against attack by other tribes nearby. In 1821, Mexican Governor Mariano Alvarado granted Rancho San Luis Obispo to two brothers, Manuel Antonio and Agustín de Anza y Costilla. The rancho was divided into four parts: Anza Partido (later part of Los Angeles County), Laguna Seca (later part of Orange County), Monterey Park (now Pasadena) and Cucamonga (now Chula Vista). In 1835, a group of Englishmen under Captain James Richardson explored the area that would later become Lompoc when they were mapping it for Spain as part of their efforts to find a route to El Dorado through Central America. While exploring some hills east of wherepresent-day Lompoc sits, they discovered gold nuggets on July 16, 1835 by prospecting with picks and spades while lying down on their stomachs at an elevation of . They named the area "Laguna Seca" after one of its main rivers—the Laguna Seca Creek ran through what are now downtown Lompoc and neighbouringSanta Barbara County). A year later Don Carlos Altamira bought Rancho San Luis Obispo from José Joaquín Moraga for $5,000 plus interest; he had been appointed governor by Emperor Maximilian I during his visit to California in 1834 as part of his campaign for independence from Spain. In 1840 he donated 200 acres (80 hectares) adjacent to his Rancho Arroyito ridgetop farm near present-day Mount Madonna so that readers could read newspapers without having them stolen by Indians working on his property nearby; this became known as "Altmira Park". Don Carlos died in1846 before he could realize his donation; however, it was realized and developed into the current Altmira Park community today. After Commodore John Doolittle's USS Enterprise sunk off Point Conception on October 17th 1942 within easy rangeof Japanese forces during World War II,, American servicemen working on shore duty looking out overPoint Conception reported seeing large ships coming downriver towardthe ship wreck using oars only hours before her sinking (). After much research local residents decided that HMS Dragonfly which masqueraded as an American battleship () had actually been carrying Japanese forces led by Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto () planning Operation Matsu - a surpriseattack against Ulysses S., Jr.'s fleet stationed at Midway Atoll (). Residents put up posters around town warning sailors not go nearthe wreck (), but no one ever bothered to follow through because they knew those responsible would be caught sooner or later.—This event becameknown locally as ""The Pearl Harbor Attack""

Today, Lompoc also has a number of restaurants and bars that offer wine as well as food items such as cheese fries and gnarled wood-fired pizzas. The towns economy revolves around its vineyards, with many of them being abandoned due to lack of support or damage caused by earthquakes or other natural disasters. Many are now open to visitors for tasting sessions during summer months when they are at their best; however, most are closed during winter because of disputes between growers over price changes or other issues related to grape picking season.
