Lompoc, California is a small town located in the Central Coast region of Ventura County, California. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Lompoc is known for its sandy beaches and hills that are home to several vineyards and wineries. The town was founded in 1887 by John Pemberton and his brother-in-law Edmunds Waddell as a summer resort on what is now called Pemberton Beach. Lompoc's history can be traced back to 1887 when John Pemberton and his brother-in-law Edmunds Waddell settled in Santa Barbara County, California, creating a community known as Lompoc on their land near present day Pemberton Beach. The name comes from "lombok" which means waves or foam on this coast of Long Island Sound. In 1888, Lompoc became an incorporated village with Joeseph Breen as its first mayor. In 1912, Lompoc became one of the towns annexed into Ventura County by then Governor George Norris following passage of Proposition 12 which approved secession from Ventura County if it were not pleased with government services being provided there primarily through county jails and other local agencies rather than through the elected officials within Ventura County alone. In 1951, after years of planning and fundraising by local citizens including Jack London who donated $10K to help get started, Lompoc was named America's most beautiful small town by "The New York Times." That same year saw the opening of the world's first golf course designed specifically for children - Playland Golf Course - followed by two more during the next decade including Donnybrook Country Club (now Laguna Hills Country Club) in 1964 and Pacifico Ranch Golf Links in 1972; both courses still offer excellent championship play today. Lampocoans are descendants of Spain/Latin Americans who arrived beginning in 1769 during Captain Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo's voyage led by Francisco Marquez de Zúñiga across North America aboard ship la Trinidad San Diego Chartered vessel". Some attribute this early influx of Spanish Californians to social unrestrained by traditional values brought over from Mexico City such as polygamy which had become rampant among some Native American groups as well as religious persecutions practiced against Catholics living outside Mission settlements due to fears that they would proselytize among their own people; Mexican forces began landing on Southern California shores circa 1840 seeking possession thereof for Mexico proper although no land was actually claimed until 1850 when parts were acquired at Saugus Harbor via adage "Nimitz Harbor belongs unto us."
