Lompoc is a city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. The population was 10,827 at the 2010 census. Lompoc is located on the eastern edge of the San Francisco Bay Area and is adjacent to Stockton and Modesto. It lies about 12 miles (19 km) north of downtown San Francisco. The first permanent settlement in what would become Lompoc was made by Native Americans in 1839, when they built homes near present-day Fillmore Street. In 1847, James Irvine purchased a Rancho Los Troncos from José Altamirano, who had also purchased part of Rancho Nevada from Governor Manuel Miranda. The town began as an agricultural community with land irrigated by canals running through it; but its growth was hampered by periodic droughts and occasional earthquakes that struck nearby farms. In 1906, incorporation as a city followed the passage of Proposition 8, which allowed for municipal annexation without voter approval; this action helped spur economic development in Lompoc. After years of struggle against censure from suburban mayors demanding more affordable housing than could be provided in their own jurisdictions, Lompoc finally achieved zoning laws permitting mixed-use development around its main square in 1978 that has led to its current success as a bedroom community for Silicon Valley

The town was originally named "Atherton," after John Atherton, who donated land to the town in 1851. Lompoc grew rapidly during the early years of the 20th century due to its location at the junction of two major railroads and its access to both water and agriculture. The population reached 5,000 by 1920 and 10,000 by 1930. In 1945, Lompoc joined the United States as part of the Brooklyn-Queens-Jersey City Area and experienced rapid growth until it became an incorporated city in 1959. From 1959 to 2013, Lompoc was among California's most populous cities with a population over 100,000 residents. Due to steady economic growth since then and its status as a global center for tech companies such as Apple Inc., Googleplex Inc., Facebook Inc., Twitter Inc., Salesforce Corp., LinkedIn Corporation, y Combinator LLC., Lompoc has become one of the most vibrant communities in all of Northern California. Lompoc is located on Highway 395 about 25 miles east of Fresno County seat Madera and 105 miles west of Ashland, Oregon. The community takes its name from nearby hills known locally as "Lomper" or "The Hills". These hills are associated with Native American sites that were used for agricultural purposes dating back thousands of years ago. Today's hills were first settled by European Americans in 1846 when they discovered rich gold deposits near what is now Lomper Road (now US 395). This discovery led to increased settler activity around what is now downtown Lomper including development of mills on Doe Creek which formed much current cityscape including today's Clocktower Districts along First Street between Main and Third Streets East/West alleyways bounded by Fourth Street North/South alleys flanking Capitol Avenue). The original site chosen for downtown Lomper included present day Broadway between First Street East/West (northwest corner) and Second Street West (southwest corner), present day High street between Third Street East/West (northwest corner) and Fourth Street South ( southeast corner), present day College Avenue between SeventhStreet Northeast (east side)and EighthStreet Northwest (west side), prior to 1851 when this area was part of San Joaquin County other than portions lying within Umpqua County eastwardly extending into Douglas County from northbound Interstate 5 toward Redding across Sherman Boulevard whereupon that highway divided Umpqua County into two parts proceeding thence northeastwardly through Douglas County intersecting Interstate 5 at Shasta Dam forming Lake Huron having an area exceeding 200 square miles comprising more than 12 million people
