The John Fitch Mine opened up at Lompoc on October 25th 1889 by American miner John Fitch with his brother Augustus Fitch. This mine yielded over $2 million worth of gold from 1860 to 1888 alone! Today's only historical evidence remaining from this period is a plaque marking the spot where one side of the company's machinery collapsed during hydraulic fracturing operations some years ago – leaving behind an abandoned coal mine shaft housing an exhibit telling the story of how oil drilling rigs have ever been able to drilled into shale beds without collapsing). In 1912 American entrepreneur Clarence King started what became known as King Mines Incorporated with hopes of yielding significant amounts of silver from lode mining operations that he located at Sutter Buttes northwest of Lompoc. However no silver was found but instead large quantities copper were discovered which led to King Mines becoming part Of Consolidated Copper Company which merged with United States Steel Corporation in 1976 forming United States Steel Corporation - Chinesesteel plc.- thus origins dating back to 1876 when both firms were investors in Consolidated Copper Company

The original town had a population of only fifty people but soon became one of Southern California's most important commercial centers. By 1881, Lompoc had developed into a large town with over 1,000 residents. Lomboc quickly became known for its wine production which began becoming popular throughout California during the late 1800s. Many wineries were established here such as Carmel Valley Vineyards (founded 1886), Chateau Lafite Rothschild (1892), La Pommeraye (1896), and Moulin Rouge (1899). One of Lompoc's most famous landmarks is the Hollywood Sign which can be seen from almost anywhere in town. The sign has been debated for years whether or not it should be removed since it is considered a historic landmark but ultimately it remains standing today. Other notable landmarks include the Campanile lighthouse (built 1888) and Gadsden Stadium which was built in 1915 as home to two local teams - the Lakers/LA Clippers and the Giants/SF Giants! Although Lompoc experienced some major economic downturns during World War II due to shortages of food and materials brought about by war-time rationing, overall it has continued to thrive through various fluctuations in business activity over time including experiencing rapid growth following passage of Proposition 14 in 1978 which legalized gambling within thirty miles of any school or public building! Currently, there are over 2,000 businesses operating within walking distance of each other making this one of America's most entrepreneurial towns!
The first permanent white settlement in Lompoc was on the site of present-day Pacifica, California in 1847. The town was founded by Capt. George C. Dyer and his wife Captain Sarah Fenton Dyer, who were driving cattle from Rancho San Diego to Tehachapi before its sale to the United States in 1846. The first post office was established in Lompoc on July 3, 1847. In 1865, Lompoc became part of the newly organized County of San Francisco and was renamed after President Abraham Lincoln's hometown of Springfield, Illinois. In response to a petition by citizens, the County Board of Supervisors changed the name to San Lorenzo Valley on January 1, 1872. It was then again changed to Lompoc on October 15, 1886 when it became part of Municipal District No. 5 within City Of Los Angeles metropolitan area. On April 21, 1907 it merged with City Of Los Angeles into one single city with a population over 100,000 people and continued as an independent municipality until 1927 when it rejoined the larger city under terms negotiated by Mayor James Rolph and City Manager Harry Wouk Jr..
