After heavily favoring names honoring General JHutton throughout most of his lifetime including Grant County seat Stanton, Wyoming and Healdsburg, California he finally received recognition as Lompoc's namesake when voters passed Proposition Hutton on November 3rd 1908 passing an ordinance declaring that "The City of Lompoc shall be known officially as ‘JAMES HUNTINGTON CUSTER CITY’ ". The original downtown core developed slowly following World War II due to limited housing availability and growth within Other nearby towns such as Santa Cruz which mushroomed into a full-blown metropolitan area following World War II while Lompoc languished behind with only 1/3 of the population density . However in recent decades redevelopment has characterized downtown Core neighborhoods such as North Park which surround historic courthouse square while South Park has been redeveloped into upscale residential areas complete with high-end shops, restaurants and hotels
