Lompoc is a town located in the San Luis Obispo County of California, United States. The population was 12,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Santa Maria–Santa Barbara metropolitan area. Lompoc is home to two universities, Santa Clara University and UC Santa Cruz.
The name "Lompoc" comes from the Chumash word "lompoc" meaning "to trip over something." The first person to settlements in what is now Lompoc were Mexican Americans who arrived during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The original inhabitants of Lompoc were the Tongva people who arrived from Southern California about 1769. The first post office was established in 1868 and was known as Tomales. In 1916, Lompoc became part of what was then known as the San Gabriel Valley region. The town has experienced numerous changes throughout its history. Its name originates from an incident that took place in 1847 when local militia members found Spanishman José María Lugo hiding among some trees near town limits. Lugo had been caught by surprise while stealing food from a ranch belonging to Colonel Antonio Flores and his men. When he saw the soldiers coming, he ran away into the woods where he joined the other Spaniards hidden among the trees. One of Flores' men shot him dead and his body lay where it fell until discovered by locals several days later. At this point, Lompoc became know as "Marlon Lugo's Town." In 1872, Lompoc was chosen as one of two towns in San Luis Obispo County for a new county seat; however, both towns declined to move to their new seats and instead selected different locations within San Luis Obispo County - Tomales served as county Seat from 1872-1874 and 1876-1881 while Lompoc remained an unincorporated community. On October 15, 1886 voters passed Proposition H (Halt railroad construction) which stopped all train traffic between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara counties until further notice; this led to increased business opportunities for businesses located in nearby Malibu due to passengers being unable to access those regions during that time period without traveling eastward along Interstate 5 or westward along State Route 101 (now US 101). On January 1, 1951 Avila Dam flooded most of downtown Lompoc including much of Burrard Street between First Avenue and Third Street eliminating most potential retail areas within walking distance of residents although some stores such as Woolworths were still open at makeshift locations across other parts of town such as Main Street Cemetery which has been home to many families since its creation over 130 years ago
