Lompoc is a small town in California's Central Valley, located about an hour east of San Francisco. The town was founded by miners in the early 1800s and has been home to ammunition manufacturers since the late 1800s. In 1884, Lompoc became the first city in California to ban using lead bullets in its criminal justice system. In 1916, the US Military began supplying ammunition to Lompoc through the Army Ammunition Plant. By 1938, Lompoc had become one of the few places in California where lead ammunition could be bought and used without a permit. Ammunition production at the Army Ammunition Plant stopped in 1971 when American munitions production shifted from lead to plastic for firearms. However, local ammo dealers continue to produce old-fashioned lead rounds until today. Today, both federal and state government agencies still use ammunition from Lompoc's past as well as private companies that produce various types of rounds for hunting, shooting sports, and self-defense purposes.

The name was changed to Lompoc when land developers decided to place a new railroad station there. The town began as a stagecoach stop on the old Santa Cruz Trail. A cheese factory and winery were built in 1867, and soon Lompoc became one of the leading food-producing communities in California. In 1907, Lompoc joined the city of San Francisco as part of an effort to increase trade between the two cities. Lompoc experienced some dramatic changes during World War II. On December 8, 1941, Japanese warplanes bombed the town, killing at least three people and wounding more than forty-five. The attack left many residents reeling and destroyed much of downtown Lompoc. In 1945, Lompoc rejoined San Francisco as part of postwar reintegration into American society. Since its incorporation into City Hall in 1935, Mayor John Haggerty's administration has been dedicated to keeping Lompoc vibrant and economically prosperous while providing quality public services that make it a model community for other towns across Silicon Valley working towards similar goals. Today, Lompoc is home to over 4500 residents who are engaged in various businesses or personal pursuits within their local community including arts & culture; education; health care; natural resources; manufacturing; retailing/restaurant industry; transportation/commerce; professional service
