That same year saw the opening of Lompoc Arsenal where rifle, shotgun, machine gun, pistols were produced until 1907 when all production shifted towards handguns. In 1912 Mayor Edward J O’Brien reopened Arsenal after it had been closed for many years due to damage caused by bad weather during prohibition days. After World War I there was again great demand for munitions; however this time it was not restricted to America but rather available throughout Europe too . Production resumed at Arsenal in 1921 under new ownership with Mayor William Fenton becoming president In 1936 WFenton decided that handgun manufacture should be relegated back into Armory because military procurement had now taken over ammo production In 1945 City Manager Harry Kubisch merged all armories together creating Medford Municipal Armory which became one of the largest handgun manufacturers in California . The town became a city on October 15, 1949. It is located about 20 miles north of San Diego and has a population of about 35,000 people as of 2010. The area around Lompoc was first occupied by the Tohono O'odham tribe before becoming part of Spanish land grants from 1769 to 1821. In 1868, Lompoc's post office was established at what is now Midway Drive and Main Street. By 1920, the population had grown to 412 residents; however, it only grew to 3200 residents when City Council voted on November 2, 1951 to become a city. The vote came after businessman Theodore Roosevelt donated $1 million for cityhood purposes which would have given the town an estimated $50 million in today's money over 50 years. Over time, many businesses have been developed in Lompoc including Walmart Supercenter (1996), Jack In The Box (1978), Chevron (1999), Ford dealership (1976), Applebee's restaurant (1984), ABC store (1968) and KFC chicken restaurant (1989). There are also several golf courses within easy driving distance such as Coyote Hills Golf Course (#2 ), Desert Hills Golf Course (#3 ) and Mountain View Country Club #5 . Several major highways that pass through or near Lompoc include I-15/I-8 interchange eastbound and westbound just south of the community limits and state route 905 that runs southeastward from downtown into nearby Escondido County past Sulphur Springs lake before terminating at US 101 just outside of town limits. Lompoc is home to two elementary schools - Northridge Elementary School District No 1 which serves students kindergarten through eighth grade while Southridge Elementary School District No 2 provides primary school education for students nine through twelve years old with additional services for special needs students as well as traditional public education for high school students up to sixteen years old. Additionally there are three middle schools - Eastview Middle School District No 3 houses sixth through eighth grades while Westview Middle School District No 4 houses ninth through twelfth grades along with vocational programs; Heritage Middle School District No 5 housethirteen through fifteen year olds along with artistic programs; Central Valley Community College provides evening classes for high school seniors since 2007 while affiliated with Southern California University System offers bachelor’s degrees in business administration and engineering among others Both Northridge Elementary SchoolsDistrict 1and Southridge Elementary SchoolsDistrict 2 offer dual enrollment opportunities allowing students who attend one school to also take classes at another local high school if they desire
