Lomita is a small town in the Angeles National Forest, located on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County. The community was founded in 1892 by American soldiers and their families who had been stationed at Fort Tejon during the Mexican-American War. Lomita Today is known for its wide range of shopping opportunities, beautiful scenery, and premier golf courses. The first settlers to Lomita were American soldiers and their families who had been stationed at Fort Tejon during the Mexican-American War. In 1892, when California became a state, the fort was converted into a military post named Camp Tejon. Many of these soldiers and their families decided to settle in what is now Lomita because it offered easy access to water supplies and good hunting grounds. The post served as a barracks for enlisted men and their families until 1912 when it was decommissioned. In 1912, Captain John Clements organized a group of investors to purchase land in what is now Lomita from the Mexican government for development into an agricultural center. This new venture proved successful and Captain Clements sold his interest in camp Tejon to other investors for $10,000. By 1918, there were 447 people living in Lomita when it was designated as an emergency evacuation site following World War I. Within two years, most of the structures that made up Camp Tejon were destroyed by fire while being used as storage sheds; however, many of those original foundations still stand today! A few months after World War I ended, General Order No 1 authorized the erection of buildings within the boundaries of present day Lomita according to plans submitted by Captains Clements and Waddell….the first structure built within town limits was Mrs. Fenton’s grocery store which opened on December 17th1920! During World War II much activity took place inside Camp Tejon due to its strategic location overlooking Interstate 5 southbound between Big Park Boulevard and Redondo Beach Boulevard…..much traffic has remained behind bars ever since! However much has changed since then including retail space taking over most of what once stood inside CampTejon including Mrs Fenton’s grocery store which closed down back in 1920! Loma Linda University opened its doors on October 15th1965 with just 60 students….it would only grow larger over time with ballooning enrollment until reaching 3200 students by fall 1999!!! On November 25th2000 voters passed Measure H (Halt Unlimited Development near Campus) which prohibited any new development within 500 feet of campus without prior approval from both UCLA School Of Medicine & Health Services & LMU Athletics Department…..this effectively halted all growth east/west oncampus!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lomita is a city in Monterey County, California, United States. The population was 5,826 at the 2000 census. Lomita was founded in 1887 by Italian immigrants and became a district of Monterey County in 1907. It was annexed by the City of Monterey in 1959.
