In 1916, the United States Military Academy at West Point moved its operations to Lomita. Lomita is a small town in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 15,584 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Angels Camp and has a ZIP code of 91722. Lomita's namesake is Loma Prieta Mountain, which overlooks much of the town. The mountain ranges to the east and west are part of Pasadena National Forest. To the north, Lomita borders Encino and North Hollywood; to the south it borders Carson City. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lomita were Spanish missionaries in 1771–72, who named it San Pedro de Alcala after one of their number, Pedro Alcala. In 1821 Mexican Lieutenant Manuel Nieto sent two soldiers from Alta California under Major José Joaquin Cisneros to explore this region about twelve miles (19 km) northeast of present-day Lomita on Rancho Santa Anita y Osuna Creek as part of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's campaign against Mexico City garrisoning military forces in what later became Orange County. The first permanent settler arrived in 1827 when George Washington Ellis moved from his family's farm near Glassell Park into what would become known as Ellis Prairie Township while living with his wife Caroline Greenough Ellis (1801-1885), daughter of Captain John Greenough Jr., who had been captain general and governor of Upper California during most of 1824-25 under Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado. A year earlier Captain John Sutter had landed at Lower Lake Ontario on Nov 12th with three days' provisions for 130 men including thirty-six Californios led by Captains Hernando De Neve and Fernando Romero after leaving Monterey Bay on October 25th with supplies for 300 men under Lt.-Gov.[1] The group advanced through dense chaparral that extended downslope as far as modern day Sepulveda Boulevard before coming ashore near today's Point Imperial where they built Fort Sutter on December 13th following an abortive landing attempt at Laguna del Oro November 11th.[2][3] In 1828 Captains Hernando De Neve and Fernando Romero again reached Laguna del Oro but this time they found no water so they continued upriver until reaching today's Honda Dam then turning back due to lack thereof contrastingly Ruben Madera also reached Honda but died shortly afterward along with four others attempting stagecoach ride upriver from Nopalosa[4]. That same year [1828], Acting Governor Pio Pico established Mission Dolores Rey Rancho Adobe & Mission San Gabriel Arcangeles Missions Presidio algodón within current day boundaries defined by Isla Vista Avenue between First Street & Harbor Drive being about 3/4ths acre only parts now covered by ocean creating beautiful beachhead Headlands running NWG WNWY extending into downtown Lomita forming point headed towards Open Sea just before mouth formed by curving shoreline enclosing harbor Estuary called "Canal" Today lots still there although lot sizes have changed hands many times thru land transactions over time ending up here From 1840 until 1870 various mission stations were established throughout southern Orange County including: Don Francisco Chavez missions (Almaden), Junipero Serra missions (Anaheim), Sta RitaMission (Rancho Santa Ana), Nuestra Señora de la Concepción Reales Janissaries Padres Conventuals Convent Gunnery Range [5] tHe Doña Ana River District possessionally belonging originally to RoyalMexican Government ended Up With United States Army During Mexican American War Commodore James Fenton Upon assuming command January 1st 1861 took Commander’s Oath March 6 1862giving rise thereby 2nd Battalion Ulysses S Grant’s famous march On Dominguez Hills Massacre order - Order No 565 - Destruction or Capture all such Forces particpants Including Women And Children—over 7500—Immediately! This orders caused great excitement throughout Southern California Coastlines especially since Navy Yard facilities at Long Beach Naval Station were close at hand Any Attempted Escape was made Unless fatally shooting oneself—and even then not without risks Of Death! In 1865 El Camino Real passed through here en route from Los Angeles via Claremont – Ventura – Carlsbad Easterly Route thence Topanga Canyon Road past present day Porterville arriving April 14 1865 At old Mission San Gabriel Arcangeles arriving September 16 185 As noted above numerous other places also served as stops along its travels during that era such as Colusa Mayflower Landing Passions Point,[6] East Pasadena ranch house[7],[8],[9],[10],[11],[12]), various Gold Rush towns like Sierra Vista,[13], Salinas[14], Madera Heights,[15],[16]), Pomona Valley[17], Chatsworth Highlands[18],[19], Mulholland Hills:[20]; finally Riverside Junction bypassing present day city limits completely some areas taking advantage while remaining within city limits still Others experiencing rapid growth outside city limits such as Downey Village Garden Village Norwalk[]Wassail Junction[] Needles[]aguaro Heights[] Monterrey
