Lomita, California was a small town in the Central Valley of California that experienced significant growth during the 1920s. The town was founded in 1887 by John Lomita and his wife Maria Cisneros, and quickly became known for its citrus fruit production. After World War I, Lomita grew rapidly as an agricultural center, becoming one of the largest citrus producing communities in the United States. In 1925, Lomita changed its name to honor José María Lomita y Uribe, a prominent Mexican revolutionary who had fought against Spanish rule in California. The population of Lomita peaked at over 100,000 in 1930 but declined thereafter due to natural attrition and technological advancements that led to increased crop yields. In recent decades, however, Lomita has emerged as a key cultural and economic hub within central valley communities. LOMITA: A HISTORY OF SINCE 1887 John Leroy (Juan) Lomita founded what is now known as Loma Linda Parish on December 17th of 1887 after purchasing 2 square miles from Rancho Santa Anita de los Andes owners Manuel Nieto and Lorenzo Montoya for $1 per acre ($40 per km²). On January 29th 1888 Juana Mª Pina married John Leroy at her home on San Fernando Street in present day downtown Los Angeles. Juan started farming land south of present day Mission Road which he named “Rancho Los Olivos” or “The GoldenPalm” because of the golden oranges he produced thereon. On November 1st 1889 rancho Los Olivos sold to Antonio Villarreal for $5 per acre ($160 per km²). Antonio confirmed this sale with deed #2 dated December 3rd 1889 which shows that they paid "chica" (equal to $10 today) plus interest (3% payable annually) on top of the purchase price! This indicates that Antonio already held title deeds to some land east of present day Don Pedro Road/Regional Rd., probably including much of what is now downtown Los Angeles! In 1893 James Fenton purchased Rancho Santa Anita de los Andes from Jose Alvarez for $15 per acre ($320 per km²). The original grantees were Francisco García Simonsen & Amalia Rojas Saleño; however it appears James Fenton only ever leased part or all of his title from Jose Alvarez until 1896 when he obtained full ownership through deed #1 dated November 20th 1895 withJose Alvarez signing as witness (#6)! In 1902 Adepta Lopez received title deed #1 from José Alvarez for 640 acres grantable subjectto future irrigation improvements! From then until 1916 she managed & operated 6 parishes spread over 9 counties within Central Valley region! As can be seen above many people acquired titles here over time (including early settler George Armstrong Copley), indicating considerable willingness by local landowners to sell their properties ! There are also several other pieces of evidence testifying to growing importance attached to this community during these years such as donations by individuals like Wanda Halloran Guggenheim & Roy Roberts towards County Library construction fund etc.. It should be noted though that not every person who owned land here got rich quick - quite a few lost their property along the way !! Finally we come back full circle back around 1926 when our current Mayor… names José María Laborde!! So many things have happened since then – most notably the tremendous increase in production brought about by nearby Bakersfield making everything MUCH cheaper!! So while it may appear today that many aspects have stayed much same throughout all these changes – there's no doubt that building wealth & status has always been very important here !!
