Rancho Adobe became the first ranchero cattle operation in this area which continued until 1907 when it was sold to John P Kennedy Sr., son of Ulysses S Grant Kennedy and his wife Jennie Custis GrantKennedy. In 1907, Lompoc earthquake struck causing significant damage including loss of life and $5 million in damage with many homes swept away or destroyed. A large dam was built near present day La Mesa Boulevard/Cypress Road for flood control purposes which left much of what is now known as Lomita beach open water beyond Point Conception Bayou however much has been lost since then due to eroding shorelines and shifting sands depositing shells within shallow depths that vary from residential properties (.3 feet deep at one extreme) all the way down into mangroves (.6 feet deep), forming anoxic areas that are difficult forbacteria or other forms of life to grow in because there is no nutrient available. In 1961 a new shopping center opened called Gateway mall which included anchor stores JCPenney, Sears and Macy's with additional buildings including office space leased out by Panasonic Corporation before they vacated it in 1999 following their purchase by SamsClub Incorporated (the current owner).Gateway mall closed after only six months when Sams Club pulled out due primarily to competition from nearby Walmart Stores but some components such as escalators still remain today inside Gateway mall property across La Mesa Boulevard/Cypress Road from where they once stood
