Lomita, California is a small town located in the San Diego County region of southern California. It is about an hour's drive from downtown San Diego and has a population of approximately 10,000 people. The name "Lomita" comes from the Tongva word for "big rock," since Lomita Peak is the highest point in town. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Lomita were Spanish missionaries who established Mission Santa Anita on December 17, 1821. Rancho Los Alamitos was granted to José Antonio Vargas on October 16, 1825 by Governor Manuel Nieto as part of a land grant that also included parts of today's Orange County and Riverside counties. The mission was abandoned in 1828 and its lands became part of the Rancho Laguna property that later was purchased by Captain Emory Whitehead. In 1851, when Mexico gained independence from Spain, Whitehead sold his holdings to James Wooten. Wooten renamed the rancho Laguna de la Rinconada (Mountain View Ridge) which meant "the ridge beyond which no one goes." In 1865, John Belden bought Laguna de la Rinconada and replaced the Spanish words with English words to create Belden Heights which still stands today as one of Lomita's most prominent landmarks: Belden Hill overlooks Straiton Avenue and contains a number of homes dating back to at least 1896. In 1907 William Randolph Hearst bought Laguna de la Rinconada along with all of present-day Southern California for $5 million dollars and began development including building Hearst Castle across Straiton Avenue from where Lomita Boulevard begins today. He named his new castle after himself - Hearst Tower (or simply Tower). The following year he donated most or all of what remains of Hearst Tower (minus some minor damage) to the city government for use as a public library building; it opened as City Hall on November 15th, 1909. At that time there were only two libraries in San Diego County - La Jolla Library and San Diego Public Library - so this donation made considerable symbolic value because it represented not only physical change but also change zoned into libraries specifically forSAN DIEGO COUNTY residents instead of just general circulation materials such as books etc... tower continued serving as civic center until 1992 when it burned down due to arson... before being rebuilt larger & more expensively than ever before!
