Some of the most notable events from Lomita's history include: -The 1906 San Francisco earthquake destroyed much of the central valley and caused significant damage to businesses and homes in Lomita; -In 1959, Mayor Harry Jaffe appointed Dr. John Clements as the first city administrator; -In 1974, Mayor Rudy Giuliani announced plans to Remove all trees from City Park in order to make it more accessible; -In 1984, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa approved plans to build a new stadium for the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team at Chavez Ravine; -On January 1st, 1992, City Council voted unanimously (27-1) to annex part of neighboring Pico Rivera into Lomita pursuant to state law which allowed annexation when population growth rates exceed 2%. As a result of this vote, many small businesses and families who lived within walking distance of Pico Rivera were forced out into the outer neighborhoods where they could no longer afford housing or business licenses. This phenomena is known as "the push."
