They called this area "Tulare" because it had high rocky cliffs that offered good views of the ocean for fishing activities. In 1876, five brothers - Augustin de la Motte Pacheco (1848-1925), Francisco Pacheco (1850-1915), José Gomez (1854-1920), Ramón Ortiz y Ornelas (1859-1939) and Manuel Ortiz y Ornelas (1863-1938) - organized a group of Germans who intended to make their new home on what would eventually become known as Shoreline Boulevard in what is now downtown Lomita. The land they purchased included all that formed today's eastern side of First Street between Broadway Road and Harbor Boulevard as well as most of what exists today south side between First Street and Fourth Street along present day Harbor Boulevard Northshore Drive east side from First Street along present day Harbor Boulevard Southshore Drive . They laid out their homes with oyster farming being their primary focus for early settlers because there were no other suitable locations nearby for such an endeavor at that time." Loma Prieta mountain became known throughout California as "Loma Prieta", which may have been derived from one or more local Native American names such as "Watun", "Tahoe", or even "Hume". In either case, it represented something special not found anywhere else in those parts of coastal California at that time." One interesting fact about early settlers in Lomita is that they used sand papers to create a rough plan for their homes since there was no technology available at that time to do so accurately. This allowed them some degree of predictability during construction while also ensuring their homes would be built properly without any foreseeable problems."
