Lomita is located on the southern coast of Orange County and it is bounded by the city of San Diego to the east, Carlsbad Caverns National Park to the southeast, and Mission Beach to the west. The town's ZIP code 91950 is within unincorporated areas of both Carlsbad and San Marcos. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lomita were missionaries who journeyed up from Mexico in 1821-22. They named a beach on nearby Point Loma after an Indian chief, Nuevo Rancho de la Gaviota (New Mexican Rancho de la Gaviota), which means "new ranch." In 1875, William Hite platted what became today's town on his land northeast of Mission Beach. A post office called Hiteville was established in 1888, but it was discontinued in 1893 because there was no water available for postal service. In 1896, Lomita residents raised enough money to build a mail station on top of their library which they named "Lomo" (the Spanish word for rock). Lomita is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 20,717 at the 2000 census. It is located on the edge of the Imperial Valley and on the eastern side of San Diego Bay. Lomita is bordered to the south by Carmel-by-the-Sea, to the north by Encinitas and Seal Beach, and to the east by Del Mar. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lomita were travelling down what is now Interstate 805 in 1821 when they discovered that a bay extending into their present day area had not been explored before. Captain Jonathan Guggenheim's party sailed up this bay in an attempt to find a route from Point Lobos on Santa Barbara Peninsula across Santa Cruz Island to Mission Bay on San Diego Bay. Captain George Vancouver landed his ships at Lomita Pointe on November 6, 1775 and named it after Sir Christopher Isham who granted him land for building a navy off Monterey Peninsula which he also claimed for British Columbia (now Canada). The town was founded by Captains John Doolittle and Nathaniel Jarvis Grant on May 1, 1848 as part of Rancho Rincon de La Palma Mexico grant given them by President Manuel García Márquez following Mexican Revolution which ousted Spanish rule over much of California including most of present day Lomita and Orange counties. In 1870s there were only about 20 people living in what today is Lomita City Limits with just 5 or 6 stores open because no railroads reached that area until after World War II when development began around airports such as Los Angeles International Airport - then known as "Chico" - making it possible for residents of nearby Irvine (then known as "Tustin") to commute easily into downtown LA without ever leaving their homes or having anything other than transportation available within reach except morning commuter trains which stopped right outside their doors until 1984 when Southern California Edison put in power lines running all the way through town so commuters could get work done while staying connected via cell phone/computer gridlock caused some businesses close but made room for new stores/restaurants etc... . In recent years redevelopment has recommenced with many new housing developments built along I-805 creating more density around commercial areas while smaller blocks have been redeveloped along residential streets near new schools/ parks etc... .
