Lomita is a small town in San Luis Obispo County, California on the eastern shore of the Pacific Ocean. The population was 5,191 at the 2000 census and 6,041 at the 2010 census. It is located on U.S. Route 1 between Santa Barbara and Ventura counties and forms part of the Santa Ynez Valley region that includes most of Los Angeles County. The area now known as Lomita was first settled by Native Americans in 1821 as part of Rancho La Puente; it was given to Manuel Nieto in 1848 by Governor José Antonio de Canoga y Rivera. In 1863, General William Tecumseh Sherman's army burned down much of Lomita during its march through southern California after capturing Santa Barbara and other towns in what became known as Sherman's March to the Sea. Lomita began hosting a post office in 1870; it was moved from Encinitas to Lomita in 1906. The community name honor Dragoons Lieutenant Colonel James Ayer (1810-1878). Ayer served as Commandant of Camp Grant from 1861 until 1865 when he resigned because his unit participated in the American Civil War. He later donated land to form what is now Goodyear Park Boulevard adjacent to his former campground complex east of Interstate 5 near where Goodyear Rd meets National Forest roads WILSON RD and MEADE Hwy (now Redondo Beach Blvd.). Ayer also founded an agricultural school which still operates today called James Ayer School for Agricultural Studies which has since been renamed Goodyear Park High School after him - goodyear being one of many terms used for ranchos or rural areas along this stretch of coast during this time period including "Valley Forge". Lomita is a small town in southern California. It was founded by Mexican immigrants in the early 1800s and has been home to many families since. The town was established on a small stream called the Río Loma, which means high mountain stream. The name comes from Spanish for "high mountain" and refers to the rise of the mountains to the east. The first Europeans to visit Lomita were Spanish traders in 1822. They named the creek after a local rancho (a property). In 1848, American settlers arrived in what is now Lomita, and they renamed it after Captain George Ball as part of an effort to attract more settlers to their area. By 1870, there were over 100 people living in Lomita. Lomita experienced some major changes during its history. In 1906, a fire destroyed most of the downtown business district, killing several hundred people including many of Lomita's prominent citizens. Afterward, businesses moved away from downtown and started clustered around two miles north of town on Highway 101. This area became known as Centerville because it housed most of the town's services and retailing outlets. In 1916, new leadership took over at Southern Pacific Railroad following World War I and began making plans for a new railroad line that would connect Los Angeles with San Diego through Lomita Valley. Construction began on this line in 1922 and reached completion in 1926; however, it was not used because Southern Pacific decided against investing money into such an important project at that time due to political instability within Mexico City*. In 1969–1970, local residents voted unanimously to rename Lomitista after then-Governor Ronald Reagan* because he had helped promote development near Centerville.* Many residents still live close by * today!
