The first store in Lomita opened its doors in 1907. The city experienced growth during World War II when many Americans fled to Lomita to fight. Today, Lomita remains an vibrant community with strong ties to its Mexican heritage and history.

Lomita is a small town in Southern California, located on the Pacific Coast. The population was 5,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of Bakersfield and Kern Counties in the San Joaquin Valley region of California. The first Europeans to visit Lomita were horses led by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542. In 1821, Manuel Nieto built a ranch here called Rancho La Brea y Lomita (later named Rancho Los Alamos). In 1847, José Selva y Ocampo founded Mission San Antonio de Padua (MISSION SAN ANTONIO) on this site. The mission served as a center for evangelism and trade with Native Americans until 1849 when it was destroyed by an earthquake that struck Bakersfield. In 1863, Ulysses S. Grant leased 3,000 acres from Manuel Nieto to build Fort Stockton on the abandoned mission grounds; at this time Lomita was still Spanish name "San Francisco de las Pulgas". A year later, on November 17th 1865, American forces burned down the fort during the Mexican–American War because they believed Mexican forces were using it as target practice for artillerymen practicing along the coast. At this time Lomita had just 1 inhabitant: Mexicoano José Alonso Garza who manned an old adobe jail to provide defense against US attacks during these hostilities. On March 25th 1870 United States Marines attacked and burned down Adobe Walls near present day Main Street in what is now known as Battle of Adobe Walls which resulted in over 50 Marines casualties including 2 officers and 11 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded.. Aftermath of battle saw increased construction activity around community with many new buildings being erected especially Episcopal Church (1871), Presbyterian Church (1872), Masonic Lodge No.(1875) and School Annex Building No.(1876). On October 21st 1881 school annex building #8 collapsed due to bad design addition made without any proper load-bearing walls; however no one was injured because all students were inside when it fell according to current thinking at that time.

As result post-World War II growth has been more gradual especially as military activity declined throughout Chicagoland area leading to lack of major infrastructure investments necessary for larger scale redevelopment like currently taking place adjacent to Army Garrison Santa Ana windsock complex housing well over 100 thousand people.

Lomita has seen significant development over its history including becoming one of several towns annexed into Bakersfield during city's 1954 annexation process.
With increasing commerce surrounding town various hotels have been built such as Commodore Hotel(1957), Ambassador Hotel(1958), Majestic Hotel(1959), Sierra Inn(1970), Four Seasons Resort & Casino(1976)), Starwood Grand Hyatt Regency(1987)), Sheraton Anaheim Hills Resort(1993)), Radisson Anaheim Hills Resort& Spa((1998))and Encore Orange County hotel chain finally opening their doors in 2001. During recent decades residents have worked hard towards developing mixed use properties across much of downtown westward expansion termed “the revitalization corridor” while also working towards expanding into neighboring communities eastward.
