In 1861, Lomita was incorporated as a municipality and its first mayor was Edwin Sibley. It is also said that during the American Civil War, Union soldiers often stopped at the Gun Store to buy ammunition for their cannons.

Lomita, California is a small city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 31,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Pacific Coast Highway and borders Agua Dulce to the north and Santa Clarita to the south. The first permanent settlers in Lomita were brothers José and Manuel María Cabrillo who settled there in 1821. In 1835, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo purchased land in what is now Lomita from Isidro de la Serna for $4,000USD. In 1850, John Cranch bought more land from Rodriguez Cabrillo for $8,000USD. By 1890, Lomita had a population of over 100 people. In 1901-1902 Carlos Orozco opened the first commercial grocery store in Southern California when he moved from his home near LAX Airport to open Orozco's Grocery Store #1 on Main Street between Dos Palos Road and Gough Avenue (now part of Gough Drive). A second location was opened by Orozco and his brother Alberto at 5th Street & Main Street (now part of Rodeo Drive) in 1902 before finally moving to their current location at 17th Street & Main Street in 1903 which they continued to operate until 1955 when they closed down due to lack of customers; however their stories live on through local lore as "the last grocers." In 1915 an oil well was drilled under Lomita by Standard Oil Company off shore which led to increased production around that area which caused businesses such as Orozco’s Grocery store #2 (later renamed Chevron Station), Pico Chico Cheese Emporium and many other stores along with residential development around it all starting up including Ortega Park which currently has a cluster of restaurants called The Olive Garden inside where José María Cabrillo House used to be located before it was razed during Expo '92 Finally after years of planning by various business owners various streets were named after local pioneers like José María Cabrillero Boulevard Civic Center Way Josefina Garcia Boulevard Alma Mater Parkway Santos Rodriguez Boulevard etcetera resulting in what is now one large street grid with numerous commercial/residential areas within it today
