Lomita is a small town located in the San Juan County seat of Santa Barbara, California. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. Lomita is located on the Pacific Coast Highway, about halfway between Santa Barbara and Ventura County. It is bounded by the ocean to the east and west, State Route 101 to the north and south, and Interstate 5 to the east and west. Lomita's history began with exploration by Spanish missionaries in 1769. A U.S.-owned rancho was granted in 1859 to José Maria Cisneros, who renamed it Rancho San Miguel de Lomita after his home country of Mexico City. In 1871; James Irvine bought Rancho San Miguel de Lomita from José Maria Cisneros for $1 million dollars and donated it to the United States government as part of Rancho Atascadero National Monument which included parts of today's Santa Barbara County. In 1906; Mexican immigrants started arriving in large numbers in what would become known as "The Fruit Belt." Many of these immigrants were farmers who had come overland through Sinaloa Province on their way to California looking for land grants or work opportunities. They settled around Lomita Creek where they developed a citrus industry that continues today. In 1915; local resident John Fenton organized a golf club called The Mountain View Golf Club which became one of Southern California's most popular social clubs before merging with Hazeltine Woods Country Club in 1957. During World War II many residents joined military service including those from Lomita who served in Naval Air Station North Island (later McGuire AFB) near Isla Vista until 1951 when they transitioned into Army service at Fort Tejon until 1954 when they withdrew again into civilian life at Fort MacArthur near Dumont Dunes ending their military careers there. In 1969; developer Don Armstrong built his first house on shoreline overlooking Lomitas Creek just north of its current intersection with State Route 101A (now I-5). Today this neighborhood is known as Armando Menendez Park which continues to be one of its most popular attractions for tourists year-round due to its views across Catalina Channel towards Los Angeles Harbor and Point Mugu Shoreline National Monument
