Lomita is a small town in San Diego County, California. The population was 4,865 at the 2010 census. It is on the eastern edge of the City of San Diego and has a mixture of Mission Revival and modern architecture. Lomita has been home to a variety of businesses, including a paper mill that closed in 1980 and now operates as an eco-tourism attraction, since it offers tours of the mills'reated lumber processing facilities. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lomita were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his crew on their exploration voyage from Mexico City to Monterey Bay in 1542. Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés reached the area about 1621 when he sailed down La Jolla Creek into Baja California under Captains Gaspar de Portolà and Antonio de Ulloa. In 1769 Father Junípero Serra founded mission Santa Ysabela (present-day Lomita) about four miles northwest of present-day Lomita on Rancho Puente Verde leased from José María Peralta y Soto for $300 per year. The first white residents were two men who had journeyed overland from San Francisco: James Cook in 1801 and Pedro Alvarado in 1803 aboard Don Miguel De la Torre's ship "Almirante Fortunato". A post office was established at Santa Ysabela on May 10, 1828; it operated until February 9, 1851 when it was moved to Chula Vista after being destroyed by fire at its predecessor's location near present-day Rancho Rinconada.* From 1850 through 1865 much of today's unincorporated part of ZIP code 92634 was part of El Cajon land grant which included parts now known as Wrightwood Canyon east off I–5 Exit 163 (now Veterans Memorial Drive), north off I–5 Exit 169 (now State Route 92), west off US 101 south past Interstate 5 exit 210 (Pasadena Road/US 395), east off SR 92 opposite Naval Air Station Miramar* (*See History section for more information.) In 1925 John Denny developed citrus acreage northeast of downtown Lomita between SR 92A (Don Valley Parkway) and SR 292A (Homespun Way). Denny built his first orange orchard there in 1927. His orchards remain one of the most important citrus production areas in northern California today. In 1932 Drs.-Cooperatives Fruit & Vegetables began growing oranges adjacent to Denny Orchards with marketing rights throughout Southern California; they remain one of Orange County’s primary producers today with acreage totaling over 6,000 acres statewide.* (*See History section for more information.) In 1941 local resident Harry “Happy Harry” Heineman opened his successful truck stop serving Refreshments Newsstand coffee out back across Home Avenue from then thru 1959 followed by Norma’s gas station next door open 1946 thru 1984 then Ralph’s restaurant inside store 1956 thru 1978 before closing thank you all for 38 years *(*Heineman Place remains open as Harry Heineman Park today.)
