In 1868, Major General James Halleck issued an order to use projectiles made of brass or iron instead of lead for artillery due to the dangers associated with lead ammunition. As bullets became more accurate, they began being used for hunting and target shooting as well. In 1909, Lomita residents voted to ban smoking in public places. This was one of the first laws in CaliforniaRegarding smoking issues. One of the most famous residents of Lomita during this time was William Cowperthwaite who served as mayor from 1859-1860 and 1865-1867. He is also considered one of the founders of Ballwin Township which is located today within the city limits of Pomona

Lomita began as a small dot on the map in 1911 when five families from San Diego moved to what is now called Point Mugu and started a citrus orchard. They named their new community "Lomita" after its location on a cape that overlooked the ocean. In 1925, Lomita's post office opened and it grew quickly into a town with over 10,000 residents by 1940. In 1957, Lomita voters passed an ordinance establishing day care centers for children ages 6-14 years old and allowing grocery stores to sell food for consumption by these children. This change helped spur economic development in the town and has led to today's vibrant cultural life here. Today, Lomita enjoys many recreational amenities including beaches, golf courses, tennis courts, hiking trails and more. Its unique history and culture are also well known throughout Southern California; visitors often remark on how refreshing it feels not to be bombarded by city noise all week long!

The name "Lomita" comes from the Tongva word "loma," meaning hill or mountain peak. Lomita was first settled in 1871 by Mexican Americans and American Jews who were coming to escape the conditions in Mexico City. Lomita's only store and post office operated from 1903 until 1958. In 1957, it became part of the newly created city of San Diego. The town developed around a small military airbase used by the United States during World War II. The base was closed in postwar years but remnants remain as Lomita Airport today. A number of businesses were built on and around the airbase including two stores, a bank, and a hotel which opened in 1951 and remains active today as The Hotel Del Corral. Today, Lomita is home to a population of about 730 people composed largely of Latinos who are descendants of immigrants from various parts of Latin America who arrived here during the 20th century in search for work opportunities in what was then an agricultural society. There are also some Japanese Americans living here as well as some naturalized citizens from other countries who have made their homes here since before WWII when much of Southern California was still under Spanish rule.

In 1993, Lomita was annexed by Hollywood Hills as part of the Addison-Wesley City Council merger process that followed the dissolution of Hollywood Heights' councilmanic body.
