In 1958, it merged with neighboring Pismo Beach to form the current Lomita CDP. The first post office at Lomita opened on December 12, 1887., and was called "Coffin". The name change came about because Hiram Coffin's father had named him after Lord Byron's birthplace Lonatiu Greece although he never went there himself.
