Loma Linda (Spanish: La Loma) was a small farming community in the Sacramento Valley, now part of the San Bernardino County, California. It lay adjacent to Rancho Cucamonga on the east side of what is now Riverside County and was founded by two Mormons, George Robinson and John D. Lee. The original adobe buildings that remain today were built in 1858 as a Methodist Episcopal church and school for local farmers. In 1865, Brigham Young's new Utah Territorial Legislature created Los Angeles County from parts of Northern California and Loma Linda became its capital. From 1868 until 1912 it was also the county seat of Orange County. The post office at Loma Linda opened on November 1, 1858, under the name "Ogden", changed to "Loma Linda" on July 15, 1861; "Riverside" on October 16, 1870; "Los Angeles" on January 6, 1914; and finally "San Bernardino" on March 14, 1912. The first postmaster general of Los Angeles County was Wm Halsey Steele. At one time there were over 200 residents living in Loma Linda alone during its early years as a town or village—eighteen men serving as justices of peace and sixty-foursmithsmiths working for fifty-six merchants who furnished goods or services to their citizens through three stores and eleven businesses including four transportation companies making deliveries all over town daily! This community grew rapidly due in part to religious activity with Latter Day Saints pioneers coming here specifically to set up homes among other Mormons who had fled Nauvoo Illinois following the1844 Mormon Uprising when Joseph Smith's polygamy investigation became public knowledge). Lee who had also recently arrived from Provo Utah Territory at this time after traveling across country with Joseph Smith’s family while they still resided at Fayetteville Missouri where he had been appointed an apostle (later renamed LDS Prophet). A school followed which operated until 1865 when Brigham Young authorized creation of Los Angeles County out of portions of Northern California including Lomas Linda which became its capital after being moved from Ogden UT where it previously served as the county seat due to overcrowding at Fayetteville MO which eventually merged into LA county upon its creation in 1912 . On October 16th 1870 Presbyterian minister Jno Ewing organized a daylong meeting attended by many persons interested in founding a new Christian settlement near present day Riverside CA called Garden Grove but no action took place due various factors such as lack of funds or political instability withinLA COUNTY at this time caused by partisan politics between Democrats & Republicans controlt othe state legislature
