Loma Linda is a small city in the southern San Bernardino County of California, United States. The population was 27,512 at the 2010 census. It is the easternmost incorporated city in San Bernardino County and lies on the border of Riverside and San Bernardino counties. The name comes from Spanish words for "mountain" and "lodge". The first permanent settler in what is now Loma Linda was Hiram Sutter, who arrived there in 1851. Sutter built his initial Rancho Niguel Adobe on what became Loma Linda's east side about mile (1 km) north of present-day downtown. He also founded two other villages: Agua Dulce (now part of Boyle Heights) on the west side of town and Colonia Nueva (now Cathedral City), south of town on a hill overlooking both towns. In 1865, John Cranch erected an adobe ranch house at what is now Westwood Drive about one mile east of where Eastwood Road now intersects Interstate 10; this location would become home to many later residents including Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan. In 1868, considerable development took place at what would become known as Cahuenga Pass which led to increased traffic congestion around Los Angeles Airport due to passenger demand for air transportation between Southern California and points north during that period; consequently, Congress created I-10 along with other state highway laws during its yearlong renovation project authorized by Governor Goodwin Lyon in order to alleviate these issues. During World War II, Donahue AFB was located adjacent to present day Loma Linda as were numerous other military installations throughout Southern California; however all were ultimately closed down after the war ended. Today only portions of Donahue AFB are still visible with open land surrounding it used primarily for agricultural purposes while much else has been demolished or replaced by housing developments over the years - most notably Highway 62 nearsite which once served as an airport taxiway servicing various buildings related to Army activity during World War II before becoming a commercial center today with no remnant evidence remaining except for a few aging trees nearby

Loma Linda was founded in 1881 by José Garza and his wife, María. The college was named for Garza's paternal grandmother, Loma Linda County. In 1902, the Garzas donated land to establish a new campus on what is now east of downtown Loma Linda. The original main building, which still stands today, was built in 1903-1904. For many years it served as the only campus in California with a degree from one of America's leading universities. In 1967, the university moved to its current location on University Heights Drive in west Loma Linda.
