The department's first badge was granted to Wm. Halsey on November 9, 1886. In 1898 the department purchased its first horse drawn wagon and used it for patrols and investigations. In 1915 Loma Linda became anindependent city under statehood; however, it retained its police department until 1935 when it merged with neighboring San Bernardino County. In 1935, the county changed its name to Los Angeles County and formed a new police department within that organization called the LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department). Loma Linda again had its ownpolice force from 1945 until 1972 when it amalgamated with other cities in Southern California including Fullerton, Riverside, Irvine and Van Nuys for a total population of over 200,000 people. Loma Linda is a small town in California, located within the Stanislaus County seat of Lompoc. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Mormon immigrants from Utah in 1851 as a farming community on Rancho Los Alamos (now part of Lompoc). The name "Loma Linda" comes from Spanish for "pitcher's peak." In 1876, John F. Kennedy and his brother Joe were married there and their families took up residence in nearby Porter Ranch. In 1912, Loma Linda became an independently incorporated municipality. In 1916 it merged with Stanislaus County to become one of California's five counties. Loma Linda has been hit hard by economic recession since the 1990s; however, it has bounced back somewhat over the past few years with a number of new businesses and investment opportunities being available in its downtown area. A large portion of Loma Linda's history can be traced back to two main pioneers: pioneer George Washington Smith and father-in-law James Irvine Sr., who opened up what is now known as Yesler Ridge Farms near present day University Avenue in 1851. Prior to this, most land within today’s boundaries had been Native American holdings which were gradually claimed by successive waves of English settlers during British rule over much of North America during the mid 1800s and early 1900s. George Washington Smith was one such settler who arrived following initial surveys made between 1847 and 1850 that showed potential sites for ranching along both sides of Bear Creek/present day University Avenue corridor northward into then Mexican territory eastward into what is now Yosemite National Park; lending credence to theories developed by Colonel Edward Abbey about early white settlementpatterns on current U.S.-Mexico borderlands circa 1840 AD…. For more than fifty years various landowners have continued to subdivide property herein for development purposes having little or no affect upon long term use or occupancy thereof….. With limited exceptions all remaining native Indian reservations are currently off limits to residential development except through easements granted through Bureaucratic channels……………………………………………………………………………………………………
