Loma Linda is a small city in the San Bernardino County of California, United States. The population was 31,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The name comes from Spanish for "stone mountain". The first settlers in Loma Linda were Mexican immigrants who arrived in 1818. A group of Englishmen, led by Captain John Sutter, also landed in 1818 and founded what would become Sacramento. They named their new outpost after Jesus Christ's hometown of Nazareth on the Jordan River near Jerusalem, which they saw as a model for their new settlement. In 1849, José Antonio Alvarado (alias Juan Bautista de Anza) became proprietor of Rancho Santa Anita and began to develop it into an agricultural landbase that would furnish livestock and produce goods for local consumption and export to other portions of California. In 1857 his son-in-law Manuel Nieto purchased Rancho Cucamonga; this rancho served as a gateway between southern California and northwestern Mexico during the Gold Rush era. Nieto died in 1863 without heirs so another heir was needed and eventually Benito Juárez took over Rancho Cucamonga from Manuel Nieto with mining interests leading to his ownership becoming more complex over time; Benito Juárez donated land eastward along Sepulveda Boulevard from then on known as Benitos Park until its sale to Loma Linda University in 1962 A post office called Lomas Linda was established at this location on November 15, 1850 by order of Governor Pio Pico; it remained open until 1907 On October 1st 1860 US Congressman James Kahl resigned from Congress due to election fraud allegations against him thereby ending any chance Washington D.C.-based representatives might have had to gain passage through that chamber with Mexican Americans voting there instead On December 3rd 1860 Samuel Freeman moved into #1450 Masonic road about two miles east side of town limits where he erected house now called Freeman House & Emporium today still stands
