Loma Linda is a small town in Imperial County, California. It was founded by the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1885 as a railroad station on the eastern edge of what is now Loma Linda University. In 1907, the university moved to its current location and Loma Linda became a college town. The population of Loma Linda was 23,811 in 2010, making it one of the fastest-growing communities in California. The first settlers were farmers who arrived from Oregon in 1848 and named their community after General John C. Fremont's old army commandery at Palo Alto (now Stanford). By 1870, there were three Catholic churches and 45 families living in Loma Linda. The following year, an act of Congress designated Lomas Linda as an agricultural research center for the United States Department of Agriculture under then-Secretary OF War Edwin Stanton. In 1886, lumber baron James Irvine donated land for a college that would become Loma Linda University. Construction began on the original school building—the first use of modern engineering techniques—in 1888 and it opened for classes on September 8th, 1889. Classes continued until 1942 when World War II forced the closure of most American colleges and universities due toocation codes; however, Loma Linda remained open as a college until 1965 when it became part of UCLA. In 1915–16 Governor Hiram Johnson established what is today known as "Lomax Hill" as an area where students could retire or study during their free time off from school; this program eventually led to more than 2 million dollars being invested into campus development over more than fifty years by both UCLA Bruins and local businesses/property owners alike! Since 1965, when UCLA relocated to Los Angeles County (and with it much importance given its locale), many top academics have made their homes at UCLA including Nobel laureates like James Watson and Saul Alinsky; Hollywood heavyweights like Jerry Bruckheimer (director), Barry Levinson (producer) and Steven Spielberg (director); MacArthur Fellows such as Elliot Richardson and Darlene Weinreb; entrepreneur Jerome Levy ; chairmen emeriti professors Jack Shafer Jr., Lawrence Summers ; former governors George Deukmejian , Arnold Schwarzenegger
Loma Linda University was founded in 1881 by the Reverend John S. Lomas and Theodora G. Richards as a girls' school in central Los Angeles. It became a two-year college in 1916 and then an eight-year university, making it one of the first comprehensive universities in California. In 1951, Loma Linda merged with Northridge College to become Loma Linda University–Northridge.
