At that time there were only a few small towns in southern California and this was an unusual decision because it allowed for more growth without having to worry about getting approval from other jurisdictions. In 1902, the City Council changed the name of Loma Linda again to honor Judge Hiram Maxim who had played an instrumental role in creating modern American law enforcement while working as assistant attorney general at the Ulysses S Grant Administration Department of Justice in 1885-1889 inclusive. When Judge Maxim died without children he bequeathed $5 million to UCLA which became known as "Maxim’s Gift". In 1912 Mayor Wm Mather moved into his present home on North First Street which still stands today as one of Loma Linda's most prestigious homes aside from President Harry Truman's presidential library which is located at nearby Westwood Village west of Los Angeles Airport (Heathrow). On October 1st 1916 Mayor Wm Mather passed away after serving four terms with distinction including two terms as Mayor of Los Angeles through World War I until his death at age 72 years old; he had earlier been elected Governor of California under then Republican Gov.. Alfred Eater Jr.. On November 11th 1916 following Mayor Mather’s death term began local elections where three new members were elected including former Sheriff “Smiley” Smith who succeeded Wm Mather as mayoralty candidate; Jno Peverilich (born ca 1886), later Mrs.(1927-) Rufus Hargrave(b ca 1895) & Mrs.(1929-) Norma McCurdy all residents of Maleeville Township Vacation Camp near Big Sur before moving eastward along Highway 101 just east of State Route 37 about 9 miles north eastof today’s intersection with Interstate 5
