Loma Linda was founded in 1856 as an agricultural community by Mormon pioneers and continues to be home to many Mormon missionaries and residents today. The first post office in Loma Linda opened on July 6, 1856, and it remained in operation until May 26, 1912. The name of the community came from Alma Mater (the "Lady of Loma Linda"), an early LDS missionary who had been assigned to provide education for Native Americans in what is now Inyo County. Today Loma Linda remains a center for religious education and research with over 50 LDS temples and chapels located within its boundaries. Loma Linda has hosted two United States presidential inaugurations - John F Kennedy on November 8, 1963 and Richard Nixon on January 20, 1969 - as well as both U2 concerts at Dodger Stadium (January 7-11) and Monterey Pop Festival (June 15-17).
