The history of ammunition in Loma Linda, California goes back to the early 1800s. The first firearms in this area were muzzleloaders and shot guns. In 1851, a store called “Finch” was established on the corner of Elm and First streets. This store became known for its high quality ammunition, including rifle and shotgun rounds. In 1865, a new store called “Pete” opened on First Street and soon became known for its pistols and revolvers. Ammunition dealers typically sold rounds by the box or case. In 1898, when Loma Linda University was founded, it began buying fired rights to land from farmers in order to build campus buildings. The university needed large quantities of cannonballshot (a type of shot used in artillery), so it purchased over 1 million rounds of Winchester Repeating Arms Company bullets. At that time, round manufacture was done by pressing lead out of earthenware pots into small balls that were then fire-fired at an oven to create a round shape. Bullets were then cast using dies made from iron or brass. Bullets continued to be manufactured at Pete’s until 1907 when the company moved its manufacturing operations to Springfield Armory in Massachusetts due to changes in American gun laws which limited ammunition production to tiny amounts per month as compared with European countries which enjoyed unrestricted production quotas! Ammunition manufacturers shifted their factories around the country during these years as America transitioned from an agricultural society into an industrial one (see: Timeline: American Arsenal). With World War I looming large, ammunition manufacturers turned their attention towards making munitions specifically for war purposes (e.g., shell casings). However, while Winchester Repeating Arms Company bullet production resumed following World War II (albeit at a much reduced level), other ammo companies found themselves unable or unwilling compete against European rivals such as Remington Rand & Co., Friction Firearms Division etc., who had become well-funded through government contracts and private donations enabled them not only To continue producing better quality bullets but also develop innovative new products likeArmor Piercing Rounds (APR) which allowed shooters to hit targets more effectively beyond the effective range achieved with ordinary projectiles! With America entering World War II again – this time led by President Franklin D Roosevelt – industry responded eagerly with investment in Research & Development programs aimed at developing technologies necessary for advanced munitions manufacture! By 1943 however things changed once again when Japan acquired portions of America’s allies Russia & China; transforming what little military equipment they possessed into world-class battlefield artillery! As Japan started building up their forces both offensively & defensively they required ever-larger stocks of armor piercing shells capable of penetrating Japanese tanks (& other armored vehicles)! Consequently industries responded anew with investment into research&development programs focused once again upon expanding firepower within existing designs/munition types available unto make even more powerful munitions… yet another cycle occursting as we move closer towards future conflicts? It would appear that Ammo history is never ending…..
