Lodi, California is a small town in Kern County, California. It is located on the east side of the San Joaquin Valley and north of Bakersfield. The population was 9,731 at the 2010 census. Lodi is also home to the Lodi Baptist Church, as well as Riverside City College and John Muir High School. The first permanent residents of what would become Lodi were a group of Native Americans who called themselves the Tongva in 1814. A post office was established in 1827, but it did not take off until 1851 when James K. Polk sent agent Gourdine to start receiving mail here from Southern California. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant's army fought its way through Kern County and arrived at what would become Lodi; although many people still lived on Indian reservations near Bakersfield at that time, most of the people in this new town were white settlers from Northern California who had been attracted by Grant's victory over Confederate forces at Palo Alto Bridge on September 17th that year. By 1870 there were more than 100 businesses in downtown Lodi with an average annual income of $10,000; thanks to railroad construction workers moving into the area during this time there were also big increases in industry and jobs throughout much of southern Kern County so much so that by 1880 only about 20%of all farmers remained on Indian Reservations within Kern County proper while 60%of all agricultural production took place outside it - making Rancho Cucamonga (northwest Los Angeles) one of the richest and most industrialized areas east of Sacramento! In 1905 local physician Dr William Macy opened his medical practice here which continues today as Macy Wellness Center - one of only a few private medical practices remaining in central Kern County! The townspeople had persistently asked for a railway line running through their midst connecting them with larger cities like Bakersfield or Stockton but no one wanted to build one because they knew that it would bring economic development right up against their homes! By 1920 electric streetlights had been installed throughout downtown making day-to-day living much easier for everyone including newcomers like myself who frequently walked or bikes rode around without feeling they needed to take public transportation! All sorts of interesting things began happening here during those years like First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt visiting us just before she became President Harry Truman; Hollywood film star Cecil B DeMille coming down for a visit followed by World War II veteran Admiral Chester Nimitz whose ship USS "Amphitrite" stopped off here while en route from Hawaii to Midway Island; numerous dignitaries such as Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford came through during various visits - even Kaiser Wilhelm II made an appearance after having toured our high school! As you can imagine we've seen some pretty amazing things happen here over these years including ourselves becoming "the last great American city" according to some folks I know back then!
