Lodi, California is a small town located in the Inland Empire of Southern California. The population was 9,970 in 2015. Lodi has been inhabited by successive Native American and Mexican cultures for over three hundred years. The first documentation of Lodi's existence comes from Spanish missionaries who visited the area in 1769. Jesuit Father Junípero Serra named the area San Bernardino de las Pulgas because of a group of wild pigs that he observed near La Paz Creek. A year later, on October 14, 1770, Father Luis Rivera documented the location as "Las Pulgas" and listed it among the missions Santa Ana del Oro which stood to the east of present-day downtown Lodi. In 1821, José Joaquin Murrieta became proprietor of Rancho Los Nietos and began developing it into an agricultural station known as Rancho Las Pulgas. He also built a small chapel in honor of Our Lady Of Guadalupe (whose feast day is November 8) at what is now bitumen Road and First Street in present-day downtown Lodi. After Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, Mexicans began migrating to California under various pretexts such as escaping poverty or seeking political change. Many arrived through Lodi on horseback or walked across rugged hillsides with little water or food available until they reached populate areas such as Orange County south of Anaheim Hills and Bakersfield north of Redondo Beach where they founded new towns including Christmas Valley (now Carson) and Lancaster (now Carson City). In 1848, following Mexican–American War hostilities between Californios and Mexicano forces occupying Northern California, General Mariano Castro ordered all American citizens living west of Yuma Crossing to leave or face forcible relocation within five days or be punished with death by firing squad if found remaining behind. More than 2,000 men – many women and children – successfully made their way eastward on foot over treacherous terrain before being encamped at Sutter's Mill on January 26th around milepost 20 miles northwest of modern-day Los Angeles County line near today's Anza Borrego National Monument northeast of Visalia Junction . From there they march toward Sacramento whereupon General Castro issued his proclamation ordering all Patriots within 100 miles thereof to join him forces against Mexican insurgents headquartered at Chihuahua City southwest of San Francisco within two weeks . After some skirmishes along the route participants reached Chihuahua City on February 3rd after spending more than two months marching through harsh desert conditions with no food nor water supplies ..... Only about 50% made it into Chihuahua City before retreating back out into open country ..... On March 4th most returned home safe but 5 were killed when Confederate cavalry intercepted their retreat ..... Today only a few bits remain above ground level due to construction efforts over the past several decades .... It should be noted that not one man nor woman died during this entire trek ...... At least four women - daughtersOF prominent ranchers - accompanied General Castro throughout his campaign against rebellions .......... Most notable among these ladies was Maria Julia Rubio y Salinas who journeyed with her father Antonio Rubio from Temecula , CA upriver to central Mexico prior to his decisive battle against Governor Manuel Micheltorena at Buena Vista Creek ................. Maria Julia Rubio y Salinas would ultimately give birthto America’s first Hispanic president:Mexican-born James Buchanan ............ Prior To arriving in northern Mexico she had already undergone baptism by Juan Diego ...................... In 1847 Jose Joaquin Murrieta sold rancho las pulgas adjacent to los Nietos for $6,-000 US dollars which would provide much needed financial stability for ranching operations............................... The settlement developed around a large adobe building erected by José Joaquín Murrieta himself............... With its strategic location overlooking both Coyote Creek/UCLA campus & railroad tracks nearby................. By 1853 lodesiños were using irrigation canals dug through mesquite trees watered by snow melt & surface runoff..................... By 1901 sugarcane had replaced wheat as local crop...................... Doña Ana River forms eastern border then flows generally NW towards Riverside............................................. Today partway down Freeway 97 Corridor runs concurrently thru Downtown & old Rancho Las Pulgas boundaries
Lodi was founded in 1859 by Michael Lodi and his wife, Anna. The town was named for Anna’s father, Lorenzo Lodi, who had settled in the area in 1837. At its peak, Lodi had a population of over 500 people. In 1871, the town merged with neighboring Ontario to form the city of Ontario.
