Lodi is a small town in the Mojave Desert of California, located about 30 miles east of Palm Springs. The name, derived from the Spanish words for "southwest," first appeared in 1887 as part of the Rancho Palomas Mexican land grant to Juan Bautista López. The town was platted in 1903 by W.H. Hutton and J.C. Fitzpatrick and named after Lodi Lake, which lies within its boundaries. The citrus industry played an important role in Lodi's early development; it was one of the few places in Northern California where fruit could be grown without having to go through lengthy transportation times to markets in Southern California or Nevada. In 1915, Lodi became home to Camp Jerome, one of the largest and most notorious concentration camps for Japanese Americans during World War II (the others being Topaz and Casa Grande). After the war, many Japanese American veterans returned to live in Lodi and businesses were established there to support their return home culture. Today, Chinese and other minority groups also reside in Lodi; however, it remains a predominately white community. Lodi has been a center for education since its establishment as a school district in 1909; today, it features over 20 high schools and two colleges - Santa Clara University (CSU) and SRI International - both of which offer undergraduate degrees as well as graduate programs that focus on business or science leadership roles among others. Additionally, numerous local businesses have become world-renowned due to their products being sold throughout North America or internationally - such as Philips Electronics Company (PEP), Lockheed Martin Corporation (LM), Dow Chemical Company (DOW) and Honda Motor Co., Ltd.(HMC). One example is PEP's discovery of oil near Red Bluff back on October 3rd 1908; this led directly to Pan Am Airways establishing its headquarters at Los Angeles Airport soon thereafter!
Lodi was founded by people of Spanish descent in 1853, after they discovered gold in the area. The first post office was established in Lodi on May 1, 1853. The town began to grow rapidly and by 1865 it had a population of over 100 people. A cotton gin was built in 1865 and the first cotton crop was grown in Lodi that year. In 1868, Lodi became an incorporated city with a population of around 300 people. In 1905, Lodi Voters approved an ordinance establishing Daylight Saving Time which led to a rapid expansion of the night life and economy within the city limits. By 1916, there were over 400 businesses and 2,000 residents located within the City Limits of Lodi. In 1917-1918, World War I caused significant damage to the city infrastructure which required extensive repairs; this included replacement of streetlights, sewer systems and other essential services. The war also resulted in increased demand for goods and services produced within the city limits due to wartime production shortages; this led to an increase in economic activity throughout downtown Lodi as well as a rise in prices for goods and services available within the city limits. The 1920s were another boom decade for downtown Lodi with many new businesses opening up including a grocery store (Fruita), movie theater (Cinemark) and bank (First National Bank). During this time Downtown also saw construction of several new blocks including First Street between Main AND Elm Streets and Olive Avenue between Second AND Third Streets; these blocks formed what is now called "Downtown Loop". During World War II business continued to grow but due to rationing restrictions most activities stopped until 1944 when gasoline consent decree reopened all businesses except those closed during Pearl Harbor along with any State or Federal government employees who may have been stationed outside of town during that time period
