Lodi is a city in Madera County, California, United States. The population was 25,814 at the 2010 census. Lodi is part of the Fresno Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Lodi" comes from the Spanish word "lodia", meaning "a small stream." The first Europeans to visit Lodi were members of the American Expedition under Captain John C. Frémont in 1846. They discovered a small river and named it after their leader, Lorenzo da Vincenza (1764-1829). A post office called Lodi was established in 1868, and became a town on January 1, 1879. The townsite had a population of about 100 people when it was annexed by Fresno on July 11, 1886. In 1915 the City Council renamed itself after General Pershing for his services during World War I. In 1933 General George Smedley Butler died in battle near El Centro and is buried there with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. On May 15 and 16, 1903 two earthquakes struck central California causing extensive damage to buildings throughout the San Joaquin Valley but no casualties or fatalities reported; both temblors were magnitude 5.0 according to USGS Magnitude M7-6 respectively On October 14th 1906 an earthquake struck Andalusia County with a moment magnitude of 6.9 which caused great damage all over southern San Joaquin Valley including Lodi where several houses collapsed killing 3 women and many children; this quake occured just north of downtown Los Angeles It should be noted that throughout 1906 various officials reclassified these events as minor quakes until definitive evidence arrived later indicating an even greater quake actually occurred
