La Vega decided to establish a town on his land west of Bakersfield in order to help solve this problem. This town would become known as La Paz after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who called it San Miguel de Los Andes because he thought it would be more beneficial if there were two towns named after him – one north of Santa Ana and another south of San Fernando Hills (Los Angeles). Upon incorporation into Californias new state government on January 3rd, 1850 under Governor Manuel Micheltorena, La Paz changed its name from San Miguel de los Andes toLodi which means “place where sheep graze” in Spanish. In 1860 when Don Hernando Sutter came across vineyards along what is now I-5 he decided that these vines could be used for wine production instead of just being used for farming purposes like most other farmers in Northern California then did! After tasting some wines from these vineyards he knew they were worth investing in so he bought them outright from their original owners! From hereon out Lodi quickly became successful as a winery producing Napa Valley style red wines including Wine Country (now AVA), Cabernet Sauvignon (now Zinfandel), Chardonnay (now Chenin Blanc) and Riesling! In 1984 Dinex Corporation purchased Los Angeles based winemaker John Muir & Sons who produced Muir brand wines such as Old Firebrand ($9 per bottle)and New Hope ($11 per bottle). These wines continued until 1987 when allMuir brands merged into ONE WINE COOPERATIVE which lasted until 1992 when ALL AGES WINE COMPANY was formed! At this point ALL AGES WINE COMPANY began making white wine only! Today there are over 100 wineries producing wine throughout Southern California including 20 located within Lodi proper!!! In recent years, Lodi has experienced significant growth as a bedroom community for Fresno County residents; however, some aspects of its traditional culture remain unchanged such as its large percentage of Native American ancestry (about 60%).

During World War II, Lodi played an important role as a munitions production center for the war effort. With the help of the United States government, Lodi emerged as one of California's leading industrial cities during the war years. In 1951, Mayor Edwin Sanguinetti announced that Lodi would become part of metropolitan Los Angeles when that city was created; however, this decision was later reversed and Lodi remained within its original borders until 1990 when it officially became an independent city again.
