Livingston is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 7,836 at the 2010 census. It is located on the shore of San Pablo Bay and has a history dating back to 1849 when it was founded as an agricultural village by settlers from Northern California. In 1896, Livingston became part of Alameda County and in 1978 it became part of Contra Costa County. In 1849, four men came ashore on the Bay Bridge and named the spot "Livingston" after their home state of New York. The first store in Livingston was built on what is now Fourth Street in 1850 by Charles Burden and his brother-in-law Hosea Butterfield. A post office called Livingston was established in 1851, but closed due to low postage rates. In 1896, when Alameda County was formed from portions of Contra Costa and San Francisco counties, Livingston became part of its new jurisdiction. In 1898, two brothers named Harry Waddell opened a grocery store at Third Street and Market Avenue which soon would become one of the largest grocers in Contra Costa County with over 100 stores throughout the county. In 1906, during World War I,[1] artillery rounds fell out of sky onto farmland near present-day White Road Junction; this caused property damage that included tearing down several homes.[2] The event served as inspiration for author John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice And Men (1937). The 1917 Lane fire began around 11 p.m., destroyed 400 homes,[3] killed nine people[4][5][6][7] injured 158 firefighters[8],[9][10] and burned 1 mile (1 km) along both Uomo Boulevard (now Stewart Highway) and White Road Junction east of Interstate 80 until Govan finally stopped it with 15 minutes remaining using 12 cannons while Randall’s cow barn caught fire from within just past Dunsmuir Creek Bridge before being put out with water hoses seventy feet below ground; there were no fatalities or serious injuries reported following Lane Fire #17 however many homes were lost because they were either uninsured or unoccupied at the time considered among Californias worst fires ever with more than $100 million value ($ today)[11]).

Livingston was founded in 1887 by Ezra Cornell and his wife Eliza, who named their new town after their home place on Livingston creek which they had seen while on a trip to Tulare County. The first post office in Livingston opened in 1888 and it served as the main center for communication between Fresno and other nearby towns during the early years of its existence. The old mill that still stands today was built around 1900 and became an important part of local economy until it closed down in the 1970s. Today, there are several small businesses that continue to operate out of the mill building including a bakery, gas station, meat market, hardware store and convenience store. Livingston's history can be traced back to 1887 when Ezra Cornell settled down near what is now known as Mill Creek for the purpose of farming land he had acquired from Mexican settlers. He named his new community after his homeplace on Livingston Creek where he had seen wildflowers while exploring Tulare County with his family. In 1897, Ezra Cornell sold most of his farmstead to develop what would become Livingston proper into one of central California's most important agricultural communities. By 1930, Livingston boasted over 100 homes and an estimated 20 businesses employing over 350 people- making it one of central California's most vibrant cities during this time period
