These lands lay south of present-day Berkeley and east of Sacramento County's present-day city limits. early pioneers here included Furman trader George Washington Carver and physician Drury Usher In 1840s/50s several families began settling here including: Green family (John Green), Hagedorn family (Jacob Hagedorn), Costantini family (Lucia Costantini), Pemberton family (Hugh Pemberton), Webber family (Samuel Webber), Weems & Healey wagon road builders It wasn't until 1862 when John Czarnecki homesteaded property just north of what is now downtown Livingston wrestled with water problems until a well drilled by J&J came online in 1865 providing much needed relief
