Livingston is a small town located in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,582 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Arroyo Grande Metropolitan Statistical Area. Livingston was founded in 1871 by John A. Livingston and his wife Susannah Cunningham Livingston (1849-1924). The original settlement was on bluffs overlooking the Kern River and included a single log cabin. In 1892, the community moved to its present location on U.S.-395 west of Palmdale after being chosen as one of five towns in Kern County for what would become known as the "New Town" program led by Governor Hiram Johnson. When he became President Nixon's Vice President in 1969, he announced that all communities within 100 miles of Los Angeles were required to develop an ordinance authorizing annexation into the city of Los Angeles if their populations reached 10,000 residents or more without approval from local officials. The post office closed in 1980 and most likely due to lack of mail volume; however, one can still find old postcards from before then dating back to 1907 from various businesses including Kresge's Drug Store which still stands today and offers a variety of products including cigarettes and cigars made right there inside! Many people believe that this store may have been Livingston's first business venture! In 1990, Livingston voted to become an unincorporated community within Unincorporated Kern County; it remains uncontrolled by county government today but falls within incorporated Bakersfield city limits with its own police department and fire protection services

Livingston's economy flourished until the late 1800s when diseases such as smallpox and measles started to sweep through the area. By 1900, only a few hundred people lived in Livingston while most of the businesses had closed down or been replaced by newer technologies. However, some residents did manage to keep their homes and continue to live there into the 21st century. One highlight of Livingston's history is that it was one of only two cities in California that voted against ratification of Proposition 8 in 2008 because they wanted to preserve their gay marriage rights. Despite this vote, many residents still cling onto memories about living in this vibrant community during its heyday.
