Livingston is located in San Bernardino County, California. It was founded on July 12, 1881 by George L. Livingston and his wife Rebecca. The community was initially named Butte City after nearby buttes which were the property of rancher Jesse Fenton. In 1899, the city merged with neighboring Agua Dulce to form a new city government. In 1915, Livingston annexed part of the town of Glendale and in 1922 it annexed part of the town of Diamond Bar. The population of Livingston reached its peak in 1951 when it had a population of 507 people. From 1951 through 1990, the population decreased by 33%. During that time period, most residential development took place in Agua Dulce and Diamond Bar which lost their populations while Livingston gained an increased population due to newer housing developments such as Maplewood Estates and Sunrise Boulevard. On January 1, 2020, the City Council voted 3-2 to annex portions of Fontana and Northridge which are adjacent to Berkeley Township in San Bernardino County. This annexation will result in a significant increase in population within Livingston as these areas have been vacant for many years and are now considered census-designated places (CDPs).
