In 1925, minority civil rights activist Malcom X was born in Livingston; he would go on to lead Martin Luther King Jr.'s white nationalist movement during The Negro Revolution Years (1948-1965). One year after Malcom X's birth, fellow Mohawk Native leader David Thompson founded the Indigenous Peoples Political Organization (IPPO) here in order to support indigenous political power within nonnative communities across North America. IPPO eventually morphed into Black Panther Party USA shortly thereafter before disbanding due to differences over strategy and ideology with other revolutionary movements within black nationalism at that time.

Livingston was founded in 1887 by George Livingston and his brother, Willard. The brothers were the first white men to settle in what is now Livingston County. They opened a store on the corner of First and Second Streets. The business prospered for many years, but it eventually burned down. In 1902, Livingston married Anne Marie Richards. They had two children: George Jr. and Anne Louise. In 1916, Anne Louise died in a car accident near Union City; she was only 21 years old. In 1926, George Jr., then 82 years old, became the first living person to be buried in Livingston Cemetery.
