Livingston, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 26,567 at the 2010 census. Livingston is located on the eastern edge of the Inland Empire and is bordered by Riverside to the east, Pomona to the west, and Fontana to the north. It has a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters. The first European settlers in what is now Livingston were three men from Venice, Italy who came overland from Mexico in 1834. They named their new town after Nicholas Livingston, 3rd Baron Livingston of Belhaven in Dunbartonshire Scotland. The man who bought them out—John Sutter—claimed that he had found no land for them to settle so he built his own rancho here instead. The original town site was within today's boundaries of Riverside City Limits but because it was between two mountain ranges - one on each side of the river - it never developed into an urban area like other nearby towns such as Corona or Simi Valley which did because they perched atop higher ground or had easy access to water resources." In 1853–54 Governor Pio Vasquez sent surveyors through present-day Livingston looking for a grazing rancho as part of his effort to improve public lands along Ventura County's southern border with Alta California. After finding no suitable open land available near where they were looking, they returned southward and surveyed what would become downtown Livingston on May 1, 1855 In 1865 Mayor John Sutter leased 640 acres (24 ha) from Rancho Rincon de Santa Ana administrators John Crespi and Antonio Jiron for $1 per year with an option for renewal "at any time." This property became known as Downtown San Bernardino later that year when all of downtown Riverside except for some small buildings on First Street (now Mountain View Boulevard) became part of Downtown San Bernardino when that section became part of Riverside City Limits in 1865 following incorporation by vote of its citizens." "Downtown San Bernardino", now known as "Livingston", began developing rapidly due largely to two factors: cheap real estate prices caused by continuous waves of migration during the late 1850s Gold Rush period and Robert Haggerty's efforts as city manager starting in 1861 which revolved around creating a centerfactory district capable of accommodating large numbers of workers while deflecting attention away from Creek Canyon Village — then seen as “the birth place”of Southern California’s commercial development” Haggerty also encouraged businesses including breweries and stores selling foodstuffs onto Main Street while encouraging residents to useBarterSystems transportation methods such as walking/biking/carrying goods up Market Street directly into their homes without going through Creek Canyon Village. By 1870 there were seven businesses existing at Downtown San Bernardino; four brewery proprietors ran two grocery stores; six carpenters provisioned nine dwellings; ten prostitutes serviced twenty-four customers per day; five men worked at various jobs providing services not connected with farming or business within city limits but outside its jurisdiction including street sweepers cleaning sidewalks daily; total payroll ranged from $127 ($711 worth in 1860) to $269 (14 worth in 1870)"
