In 1898, streets were named for local citizens including Senator Hiram Johnson (D-CA) who had moved from San Francisco to live here after losing his Ulysses S. Grant seat during the 1892 presidential election campaign; Congressman James Larkin (D-IL); and Drs., Jens Jensen, Adolf Flesch and Fritz Hebel who founded several hospitals in this area around that time including Oakland University Medical Center which now occupy much of one block north of City Hall Plaza across from Kaiser FamilyCare Arena - one block south of IMAX Theatre & Event Center - two blocks west off 15th Street between Walnut Creek Boulevard & Richmond Avenue - just east off Interstate 680 on Stevenson Blvd., also home to our large General Hospital complex housing various types & sizes hospital beds/clinics within +/- 3 blocks... Livingston is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 25,898 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Northern California and the second-largest city in San Francisco Bay Area after Oakland. Livingston's history dates back to 1855 when it was founded as a small town on the north bank of the San Joaquin River by farmers from Monterey County. The area now known as Livingston became part of Contra Costa County when it was created from portions of Alameda and Marin counties on January 1, 1995. The first post office in Livingston opened on December 12, 1855, under the name Grantville. On July 15, 1858, parts of what is now Contra Costa County were added to Livingston; this included all of what is now Richmond Heights and unincorporated areas around present-day Antioch and Walnut Creek. The original town site was surveyed by James Waddell who named it for his cousin John Livingston (1784–1851), an American Revolutionary War veteran and congressman from New York City who had come overland to Santa Clara Valley during the Mexican–American War (1846–48). In 1872, gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill near today’s Hercules Reservoir; early settlers brought in equipment to assay gold coins that were then stored in water tanks on their properties until they could be sold off to smelters or used as manure dumps. A millrace connecting Sutter’s Mill with Clearlake Wash provided running water for mills owned by early settlers including J.P. Morgan & Company which operated a sawmill at Clearlake between 1865 and 1870; other early businesses included a bakery (owned by Hiram Stevens), grocery store/bakery (owned by John Fenton) and hotel/motel (owned by General George Armstrong Custer).
