Livingston is located on the eastern edge of Contra Costa County and it is bordered by Richmond to the north and east, Walnut Creek to the south, Concord to the west, and San Ramon to the northwest. In 1916 white violence erupted in downtown Antioch during an election brawl between two rival political factions; one led by Congressman John Sutter (D-Oakland) and one controlled by Mayor Harry Chandler (R-Newark), resulting in three dead, twenty-one injured, and $5 million worth of damage done or threatened throughout Contra Costa County. Ultimately no one was found guilty of any crime related thereto but public opinionShift towards siding with Chandler promptedanchor Harry Dent (D-Antioch)to run unsuccessfully for mayoralty against Sutter several years later
